Salem, VA May 8, 2013 – Garin Cecchini cracked a mammoth, two-run blast over the right-center wall to rally the Salem Red Sox past the Carolina Mudcats on a soggy Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. The latest setback is Carolina’s fifth straight, and ninth in 11 games.

Owen Dew (2-3) suffered the loss for the Mudcats (11-20). Tied 4-4 entering the last of the eighth, Dew surrendered the pivotal shot with one out and runner at second base.

Matty Ott (2-2) picked up the win in relief for Salem (15-14). Ott hurled 2.2 scoreless frames, twice stranding the go-ahead run at third base.

For the 18th time in 31 games, Carolina opened the scoring when Zack MacPhee launched his first home run, a towering drive over the right field wall, with one out in the third.

The Sox responded by plating two against starter Joseph Colon with two away in their half of the inning. Carson Blair drew a walk to extend the frame, and reached third on a double by Sean Coyle. Nick Natoli followed with another double to score the runs for a 2-1 advantage.

Still trailing by a run in the fifth, the Mudcats knotted the score when newcomer Joe Sever singled, stole second, and scored on a knock by Yhoxian Medina.

Jerrud Sabourin pushed Carolina back out front with a two-run homer that soared over and out to right in the sixth. Francisco Lindor, who singled earlier to push his streak to seven, scored on the Sabourin blast for a 4-2 lead.

From there, it was all Salem. The Sox scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Natoli walked, and Cecchini doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. Salem manufactured the runs with groundouts by Keury De La Cruz and Brandon Jacobs.

Tied 4-4 in the late innings, Carolina received lead-off doubles by Luigi Rodriguez and Tyler Naquin in the seventh and eighth, but both times left the runner stranded at third. Coyle made it to first on an error to lead off the eighth, setting up Cecchini’s big moment.

The teams have a quick turn-around. First pitch for Wednesday’s tilt is scheduled for 11 a.m. Right-hander Cody Anderson throws for the Mudcats against right-hander Mike Augliera.

Carolina returns home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats for four games on Friday, May 10th. The night will feature “Fireworks Friday” presented by Carolina Ford Dealers, and the stars of Lizard Lick Towing will be in the house.

This time it is a one-day contract as Kasay, who spent 16 seasons with Carolina, retires as a Panther.

[caption id="attachment_74015" align="aligncenter" width="600"] John Kasay
Carolina Panthers[/caption]

“When we came to Charlotte, our oldest son was about six weeks old,” Kasay said. “To be able to watch your family grow, not only in number, but also in stature, it gives us a long range perspective on as blessed as we were and have been by Mr. Richardson to be able to come live in this community, this city, and really the North Carolina and South Carolina region that has been so good to our family and has given way more to us than we’ve ever given back.”

Kasay retires from the NFL after one of the most productive careers in League history. He is sixth in NFL history for most field goals made (461) and attempted (563) as well as fifth in career field goal percentage (81.9 percent; minimum 500 attempts) and eighth in points scored (1,970). His 42 career field goals of 50-or-more yards are tied for second in NFL history. Kasay’s records take on added meaning since three quarters of his career were spent kicking for Carolina, where all home games are played outdoors.

Kasay spent his 21-year NFL career with three teams: Seattle, Carolina, and New Orleans. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Seahawks, Kasay signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Panthers in 1995 where he played for 15 seasons before completing his career with New Orleans in 2011.

The holder of more than 20 team records, Kasay played in a team record 221 games as a Panther, 54 more than Steve Smith who stands second. Kasay is the franchise leader in points scored (1,482) and holds nearly every major kicking record in team annals, including field goals made (351) and PATs made (429). He was known as a clutch kicker throughout his career, converting 11 game-winning field goals for the Panthers.

Kasay was one of the first unrestricted free agents signed by the Panthers in 1995. He signed February 20 after a four-year career with Seattle along with New York Giants defensive lineman Mike Fox. Both were instrumental on the first Panthers team which set an expansion record for wins with seven in the inaugural season.

Kasay scored 105 points in his first Carolina season, but it was his second year that has become the standard for Panthers kickers. In that 1996 season in which the Panthers advanced to the NFC Championship game, Kasay scored a team record 145 points while converting 37 of 45 field goal attempts and 34 of 35 extra point tries.

His records are even more impressive considering that Kasay missed nearly two full seasons, missing all of the 2000 season after injuring his knee in the preseason and 14 games in the 2002 season with a sports hernia. However, he missed only two games the rest of his career, those coming in the last two contests of the 2004 season.

First pitch of today's doubleheader is set for 5:05 p.m. and fans can hear all of the action at 94.3 FM WRHI, 1340 AM WRHI, online at wrhi.com, or at charlotteknights.com. Danks is recovering from left shoulder surgery, which he underwent on August 6, 2012. The 27-year-old left-hander recently made a rehab appearance for Double-A Birmingham on May 2 and allowed just two runs over seven innings for the win.

Tonight's start will be his first with the Knights this season. He also made a rehab start for the Knights in Columbus last season. On June 12, 2012, Danks allowed one earned run over four innings for the Knights in a 13-6 win over the Clippers.

Tuesday's Knights lineup will feature both Danks and Dayan Viciedo, who was set to make his first rehab appearance with the Knights last night. The two White Sox stars are the second and third players to rehab with Charlotte this season. LHP Leyson Septimo also appeared for the Knights from April 26-29.

Danks, a native of Austin, Texas, is the older brother of former Knights outfielder Jordan Danks, who is currently playing for the White Sox. The older Danks is one of two pitchers in White Sox history to make at least 25 starts in each of his first five seasons (Tommy Thomas is the other). Danks entered the 2013 season with a career Major League mark of 57-60 with a 4.12 ERA over six seasons in Chicago.

The Knights return home to Knights Stadium on Friday, May 10 to open an eight-game homestand against the Pawtucket Red Sox (May 10-13) and Louisville Bats (May 14-17). Tickets for the upcoming homestand are on-sale now and can be purchased in person at Knights Stadium, by phone at 704-357-8071 ext. 2106, or online at

Lorenzetti earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals by virtue of winning medalist honors at the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Championship. Lorenzetti, the first freshman in CofC men’s golf history to win a conference championship, was the only player to shoot under-par in the SoCon Championship.

Ellis, who earned All-Conference honors and finished eighth at the SoCon Championship recorded four top-10 finishes on the season to receive an at-large bid as an individual in the NCAA Regional field.

With Lorenzetti and Ellis set to compete in the NCAA Regional, it marks the first time since 2003 that the men’s golf team has been represented in postseason competition. It is also the first time the Cougars have had two individuals qualify for postseason play.

Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 16-18. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The finals will be conducted May 28-June 2, at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Institute of Technology is the host institution for this year’s championships.

“I’m very excited for Josh and Alex to represent us at the NCAA Regional,” CofC head coach Mark McEntire said. “We are in a very strong regional, but we will make the most of this opportunity and it’s a great thing for our program moving forward. It shows our program is moving in the right direction and with both of these guys coming back next year it will provide valuable experience and depth for our team next year.”

“As we have previously, we will continue to place a great deal of importance on the U.S. Open Cup. We had a great run in the tournament including the victory over the Galaxy and it meant a great deal to our season,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “We are delighted to be able to host the second round match and play another match in front of our home fans. It is important to have the support of your home crowd in a cup style tournament like this.”

In 2012, the RailHawks hosted MLS Champion, LA Galaxy, in the Third Round of the competition in front of a sold-out crowd at WakeMed Soccer Park, who were entertained with a RailHawks 2-1 victory. In the Fourth Round, the RailHawks hosted Chivas USA (MLS) and were ousted when Chivas USA converted a second half stoppage time penalty kick.

Six North American Soccer League Teams Discover Their Lamar Hunt U.S.

Open Cup Opponents For Second Round Games To Be Played On May 21

(MIAMI, Fla. May 7, 2013) - The six North American Soccer League teams that will participate in the centenary edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup are a step closer to knowing their Second Round opponents following today’s draw for the opening stages.

The NASL teams will kick off in the Second Round on Tuesday, May 21, having been paired with clubs who contest their First Round games on May 14 and 15.

“I love this competition,” said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. “Everyone starts off with a fair chance to win the Cup and you never can predict who might get through to the final. With this being the Centennial Anniversary of the competition, it would be an exceptional honor to have a NASL club win. Our clubs are excited and will give it their all to capture the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.”

Some NASL clubs know they will face one of two opponents, while others must wait on a combination of results before learning their fate.

Current league leaders Minnesota United FC are one of three NASL clubs guaranteed a home draw and will host either Des Moines Menace (PDL) or Madison 56ers (NPSL). Second placed Carolina RailHawks entertain either Carolina Dynamo (PDL) or Chattanooga FC (NPSL).

“As we have previously, we will continue to place a great deal of importance on the U.S. Open Cup,” said RailHawks coach Colin Clarke. “We had a great run in the tournament including the victory over the Galaxy and it meant a great deal to our season. We are delighted to be able to host the second round match and play another match in front of our home fans. It is important to have the support of your home crowd in a cup style tournament like this.”

The defending champion Tampa Bay Rowdies will travel either the short distance to face VSI Tampa Bay (USL PRO) or Orlando City U23s (PDL). San Antonio’s new Toyota Field will see the Scorpions host either FC Tucson (PDL) or Phoenix FC (USL PRO).

"We are excited to enter into this historic competition again,” said Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson. “The U.S. Open Cup remains a major priority for our club, as it represents a championship on the national level. We treat every opponent the same in terms of preparation, so we will train hard to be ready for our match on the 21st."

Of the three teams heading out on the road, the Atlanta Silverbacks will travel to either Georgia Revolution (NPSL) or face Real Colorado Foxes (PDL) at a site to be determined, or travel to PSA Elite (USASA) or Laredo Heat (PDL).

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers could face a long trip of more than 3,200 miles from Florida to Washington depending on results in the opening rounds. They could take on Laredo Heat (PDL), PSA Elite (USASA) or Doxa Italia (USASA) at home at Lockhart Stadium, or could travel to Sounders FC U-23 (PDL).

Making their U.S. Open Cup bow in 2012, the NASL teams kept alive the traditional romance of a cup competition, as Carolina, Minnesota and San Antonio all progressed to the fourth round, claiming the scalps of MLS opposition along the way.

Minnesota United went on the road and shocked Real Salt Lake 3-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium before losing in the fourth round to San Jose Earthquakes, earlier 2-1 winners over the NASL Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Carolina RailHawks earned a fourth round clash with Chivas USA by ousting LA’s other team, the defending MLS champion Galaxy and striker Brian Shriver finished as the competition’s leading scorer with five goals in three games. The San Antonio Scorpions beat Houston Dynamo, but the NASL club fell at the next hurdle to fellow giant-killer the Charlotte Eagles.

Individual tickets for the May 21st U.S. Open Cup match will go on-sale immediately following the RailHawks match against the San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday, May 11th at 7:00p.m.

FOUNDATION URGES NORTH CAROLINA SENATE TO AMEND, THEN ENACT H 824

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) supports school policies that promote access to life-saving medications to treat students and staff who experience severe allergic reactions. The Foundation commends the North Carolina General Assembly for considering H 824, which would require public schools to maintain a supply of epinephrine auto-injectors, allow them to be used in emergencies, and address liability concerns for those who use this medication in good-faith. However, AAFA is concerned that one section would restrict use of these life saving devices on pupils whose allergic conditions are known. AAFA urges the General Assembly to eliminate that restriction and pass this bill before the legislative session closes.
Food allergy prevalence is rising, especially in young children. For the 6 million children that have been diagnosed with a food allergy to nuts, eggs, milk, wheat, soy or any of the other common food items that can trigger life-threatening anaphylaxis, the most severe type of allergic reaction, the everyday act of eating carries potential for worry. “No one can predict how severe a food allergic reaction will be,” said Charlotte Collins, vice president for policy and programs at AAFA. “It is essential for schools to prepare by stocking epinephrine, the life-saving medication for food allergy emergencies”.

Epinephrine Auto Injectors Save Lives
When a person comes into contact with a food allergen, an immune response is triggered and anaphylaxis may occur. Anaphylaxis is a serious medical condition, which can be life-threatening if rapidly developing symptoms are not treated promptly. Epinephrine is the medication indicated by medical experts as first-aid treatment for a severe allergic reaction to food. With prompt injection, epinephrine is nearly always effective in the treatment of anaphylaxis. Delay increases the risk of poor outcomes and even fatalities. The epinephrine auto-injector is relatively easy to use, quick to administer and is low-cost to maintain an adequate supply. The facts are simple: when available, epinephrine auto-injectors save lives.

Children spend a sizable amount of their time in school, whether for daily instruction or recreational activities. Therefore, schools must be prepared to address the safety of their students. The entire school team should be involved in developing an emergency action plan. Through an open, proactive, and collaborative process, students with food allergies can be safer in the school environment.

States are Acting to Prepare Schools for Emergencies
However, adopting an emergency action plan may not be enough. “If a school does not have an epinephrine auto-injector on-site that staff can access at any time, a child may die waiting,” Collins continued. In 2012, a Virginia first grader went into anaphylactic shock after a friend offered her a peanut at recess. She was rushed to the school nurse and 911 was called. By the time the ambulance arrived, she had gone into cardiac arrest. She died a short time later at a nearby hospital. Her tragic passing instilled a sense of urgency in Virginia to protect school children and Virginia passed a law requiring schools to maintain a supply of epinephrine auto-injectors. Maryland and Illinois have enacted similar laws.

North Carolina lawmakers are wise to join them by enacting H 824. Approximately 20-25% of epinephrine injections in schools involve children whose allergy was unknown at the time of the reaction. H 824 will offer them hope for protection while at school.

However, legislators must act to amend H 824 with its mandate to schools to stock epinephrine auto-injectors. Further, we ask lawmakers to delete Sec. 1 (e), which directs that school’s stock of epinephrine auto-injectors “shall not be used as the sole medication supply for students known to have a medical condition requiring the availability of use of an epinephrine auto-injector.” While this language is an improvement over that included in SB 700, which would prohibit epinephrine auto-injectors kept on hand at schools from being used to treat “students known to have a medical condition requiring the availability or use of an epinephrine auto-injector”, H 824 raises the same issue: the risk of delay. Delaying treatment can mean organ damage and even death when it comes to anaphylaxis. H 824’s restriction will mean precious time may lost as school staff determines if a student experiencing anaphylaxis is a student whom they are allowed to treat. The image of caring teachers and school nurses watching a young person expire while a lifesaving medication is on hand is unimaginable. We appreciate that supporters of this bill may want to discourage parents from relying on the schools to supply medications for their children; however, we urge that they prioritize the health and safety of the children at risk and not penalize them because of their parents. Schools can be trusted to monitor supplies wisely.

AAFA urges North Carolina legislators to make the simple decision to save young lives. If schools have access to undesignated epinephrine auto injectors and staff trained to administer the medication, children will not die at school when a snack lands in the wrong hands.
