No. 1 Maryland Escapes with Late-Goal Win over CofC Men’s Soccer

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – No. 1 Maryland required a late goal to escape with a 3-2 win over the College of Charleston men’s soccer team in front of 2,230 fans at Patriots Point on Saturday night. The Cougars held the lead on two separate occasions but Maryland’s two second-half goals were the difference in the match. The Cougars, having now played six teams either ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA / Continental Tire Coaches Poll, fall to 4-6-0 on the year. GREENSBORO, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s soccer team suffered its first Southern Conference loss on Friday night when the Cougars fell, 2-1, in overtime to UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Cougars (3-7-0, 2-1-0 SoCon) were narrowly outshot in a contest dictated by great goalkeeping on both ends. CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior sailor Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and freshman women’s soccer player Michaela Herrmann (Centennial, Colo.) earned College of Charleston Student-Athlete of the Week honors sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the week of Sept. 24. Maegli qualified for nationals after winning the SAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championship regatta sailed in Charleston Harbor on Crab Bank over the weekend. A 2012 London Olympian and pre-Business Administration major, Maegli was competing in his first collegiate event since 2010. He placed first in eight of the 12 races to capture his third career SAISA title. CONWAY, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team was downed, 3-1, at No. 17 Coastal Carolina at the CCU Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening. CofC, now 4-5-0, was outshot for only the third time on the season and was pegged with the loss after falling behind 3-0 in the early stages. The Cougars would take one goal back before halftime but the comeback effort would be thwarted as the second half yielded no goals. The Chanticleers came out with an electric first half in which they outshot the Cougars, 12-3, and produced three corner-kick opportunities without surrendering one to CofC.
