Gamecock Softball Heads to Charlotte for 1st Half of Fall Schedule

Beverly Smith’s group spends the first of their two fall weekends in the Queen City COLUMBIA, S.C. Sept. 26, 2012- South Carolina gets its first fall competition on the softball diamond this weekend in an event at Charlotte. The Gamecocks take on the host 49ers to start and end the event while also facing Greensboro College and Elon. With a 20-person roster that includes nine newcomers, Gamecock head coach Beverly Smith gets her first chance to see these players in action. Of the newcomers, three are transfers, including juniors Brooke Barnhill (Spartanburg Methodist) and Ashlyn Masters (NW Florida St.) and sophomore Lakyn Shull (Furman). TUCSON, Ariz. – Collegiate Baseball newspaper released its annual evaluation of the top baseball recruiting classes in the country for this season and featured the College of Charleston program. Listed 44th among all NCAA Division I schools, College of Charleston will welcome in eight scholarship freshmen for the 2013 season. Some of the headliners in the class include right-handed pitcher Nathan Helvey, an All-American Honorable Mention recipient from Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, S.C. Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina baseball team continues fall practice this week with three more scrimmages at Carolina Stadium over the weekend. All three scrimmages are open to the public on at Carolina Stadium. CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior sailor Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and freshman women’s soccer player Michaela Herrmann (Centennial, Colo.) earned College of Charleston Student-Athlete of the Week honors sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the week of Sept. 24. Maegli qualified for nationals after winning the SAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championship regatta sailed in Charleston Harbor on Crab Bank over the weekend. A 2012 London Olympian and pre-Business Administration major, Maegli was competing in his first collegiate event since 2010. He placed first in eight of the 12 races to capture his third career SAISA title.
