Charleston, S.C. – Major League Soccer’s D.C. United beat the Charleston Battery by a score of three goals to one Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in the 2012 Carolina Challenge Cup. Hamdi Salihi was credited with the game winner in the 87th minute when he tucked the ball past Battery goalkeeper, Mitch Hildebrand. United opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Maicon Santos received a through ball from Branko Boskovic. Santos ripped a shot to the near post scoring his chance on Battery’s first-half keeper, Kevin Klasila. Davidson’s Cohen Named Player of the Year SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Sports Media Association selected the its 2012 men’s basketball all-conference teams and postseason awards today (February 29). Davidson junior Jake Cohen was chosen as the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year. UNCG’s Wes Miller was named the league’s Anton Foy Coach of the Year, while Wofford’s Karl Cochran was named the Freshman of the Year.   Cohen turned in a strong all-around season for the Wildcats. The junior from Berwyn, Pa., ranks tenth in the league in scoring (13.9 ppg), eleventh in rebounding (6.0 rpg), twelfth in field goal percentage (.477), second in free throw shooting (.878) and leads the league in blocked shots (1.5 bpg). CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior men’s baseball player Matt Pegler (Greenville, S.C.) and junior softball player Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) earned College of Charleston Student-Athlete of the Week honors sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the week of Feb. 27.   Pegler picked up his second win of the season on Sunday as the Cougars defeated Xavier, 4-1. Pegler pitched seven innings of shutout ball and did not give up his first hit until the middle of the seventh inning. Pegler struck out five batters and never allowed a runner past first base.   Saylors was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after pitching a perfect game on Sunday against Wagner. KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Four members of the College of Charleston women’s golf team carded rounds of 3-over par or better to lead the Cougars to a strong finish in the final round of the three-day Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic held on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Point Golf Course. The top 19 teams advanced to Cougar Point, while the other 14 teams finished out the largest collegiate tournament in the country at Oak Point Golf Course. HOLLYWOOD, S.C. – Junior Neil Gowan fired a 1-under 71 in the final round to lead the College of Charleston men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish in the 2012 Charleston Shootout Tuesday at the Links at Stono Ferry.   The Cougars shot scores of 286-291-298=875 (+11) for the tournament and finished four shots back of third-place. Florida won the team title with a 20-under combined score. Cougars’ bats are good for 25 hits on the day MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team took two games from South Carolina State in a Tuesday evening doubleheader at Patriots Point. CofC downed SC State by 5-3 and 6-1 counts with a combined 25 hits between the two games.   Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) picked up the game one win with five innings of shutout softball.
