CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston sailing team competed in four regattas over the weekend and claimed two first-place victories at the North Points #2 regatta hosted by Clemson in Clemson, S.C., and the home-hosted Charleston Women’s Intersectional at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.   The fifth-ranked CofC women finished first and fifth respectively in the nine-team Charleston Women’s Intersectional field with a 34-point victory over its nearest opponent second-place Yale (93) and third-place Georgetown (94).   Racing began in SSW winds between 10-14 knots and a slacking ebb tide. CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston senior pitcher Ryan West has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.   West led College of Charleston to a 7-0 victory over Jacksonville on Tuesday in his first career start. A native of Glen Allen, Va., West pitched six perfect innings as the Cougars took a perfect game into the ninth inning before an infield single broke it up.   West recorded four strikeouts as he did not allow a base runner against the Dolphins to pick up his first career win. PLEASANT, S.C. – Elon came away with two dramatic wins over the College of Charleston in a SoCon doubleheader on Sunday at Patriots Point.   Elon’s Niko Fraser robbed a potentially game-winning grand slam from Dre Watts in the 8th inning of the first game, while the Phoenix Jake Luce hit a game-winning solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to win the second game.   With the 4-2 win in the first game and 3-2 victory in the second game, Elon improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play. TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Charleston softball team suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 15 Arizona in front of 2,555 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium in the final game of a three-game weekend set on Sunday afternoon. Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.) continued to get productive at bats for the Cougars and was 1-for-3 on the day at the plate and made a few nice catches and strong throws in right field. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s golf team with begin play in the 15th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday March 5 through Tuesday March 6 at the historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.   The Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 and it is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States.   The 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will feature a 6,617-yard, par 70 setup at the Palmetto Golf Club. Charleston SC – Due to severe thunderstorms in the greater Charleston area throughout the day Saturday, the Chicago Fire and Charleston Battery mutually decided to cancel the final match of the Carolina Challenge Cup, set to be played at 7:15 p.m. ET. The earlier game between D.C. United and the Columbus Crew was also cancelled; neither of the matches will be rescheduled.   Fans who purchased tickets to the games can swap their unused tickets for a 2012 Charleston Battery regular season or playoff match ticket. ANNISTON, Ala. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team claimed a 7-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at the Golden Springs Community Center. The Cougars (4-3) swept the doubles point for the first time this season behind a pair of 8-1 victories by the No. 1 and No. 2 combinations of sophomore Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.) and junior Irene Viana (Paris, France) and freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.). TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Charleston softball team was downed, 8-0, by No. 15 Arizona in the second of a three game set in front of 2,588 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The teams conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The hard-hitting Wildcats impressed with 11 hits on the afternoon. Shelby Babcock went the distance in the circle for Arizona and recorded a five-inning no hitter. The no hitter was the 87th in Arizona’s program history.
