GREENVILLE, S.C. – After College of Charleston’s Christian Powell shut out Furman for eight innings, the Paladins scored three runs in the ninth inning to nearly pull off a dramatic walk-off victory. Senior Kyle Owings struck out the last batter of the game on a called third strike and the Cougars won, 4-3. The Cougars (11-3, 3-2) won their fourth game in a row and second straight in conference play. Furman fell to 8-7 and 0-2 in SoCon play. Powell (3-1) went for his longest outing of the season, pitching eight innings, allowing just three hits and tying his career high with eight strikeouts. Cougars bested in both ends of a doubleheader at Chattanooga CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The College of Charleston softball team dropped a pair of games to Chattanooga in a Southern Conference season-opening doubleheader at Frost Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took a tough 11-1 loss in the opener and regrouped well for the second but still found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 decision. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The College of Charleston top sand volleyball grouping of Lizzie Theesfeld and Elyse Chubb finished third overall to lead the Cougars in the second day of the Aspire Higher competition in Winter Haven, Fla., on Friday. The pairing began the day with a match against the College of Charleston two squad of Kelly Kolich and Emily Shelton with an opportunity to advance in the winner’s bracket on the line. Theesfeld and Chubb emerged victorious with a 21-14, 21-17 match victory. The ones advanced to face FSU next, but fell 13-21, 8-21, and moved to the loser’s bracket. Battery loses 1-0 in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA – The Charleston Battery lost 1-0 to the Atlanta Silverbacks in a pre-season scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Silverbacks Stadium in Atlanta, GA. Atlanta midfielder Lucas Paulini scored the lone goal of the match in the 12th minute. Both sides were reduced to ten men in the 65th minute after after a scuffle that saw Charleston’s Jose Cuevas ejected. The Battery pressed for the final 45 minutes but could not find the equalizer. The Battery will continue it’s preparations next Saturday afternoon at Blackbaud Stadium with a pair of games versus the College of Charleston and Clemson University; kick off for the first match is set for 2 PM. CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The 67th-ranked UNCW women’s tennis team was locked in a 2-all battle with Charleston Southern when rain halted play late Friday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.   The Seahawks, 6-4 this season, split the first four singles matches with the Buccaneers before rain showers forced play to stop.   Sophomore Angie Sekely whipped CSU’s Angelica Sidorenko, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and freshman Alyssa Ritchie cruised past Marija Dzakovic, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles for UNCW’s two victories.   In other action, CSU’s Olga Makhova defeated UNCW’s Christina Lee, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Yvonne Huber stopped Kelly Cameron, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 position. ‘ The Seahawks kick off a […]

Cougars Successful at Palmetto Classic

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston track & field team kicked off the outdoor season on a high note as they had several record setting performances at the Palmetto Classic Friday.   Freshman Tiffany Sisk blew away the competition in the shot put as she won the competition by over a meter in 13.99 meters. Sisk’s mark sets a new CofC school record, breaking the previous mark of 12.51 meters, set in 2006 by Chakosha Lance.   In the pole vault junior Chelsea Taylor won with a clearance of 3.51 meters. GREENVILLE, S.C. – The College of Charleston offense struck fire for a season-best 14 runs on 15 hits to lead the Cougars over Furman, 14-6, in Southern Conference action. The Cougars (10-3, 2-2) had runners safely reach base in every inning, and tallied runs in all but the seventh and ninth innings in the offensive outburst. Charleston, SC – The Charleston Battery tied Coastal Carolina University 2-2 Thursday night in a pre-season scrimmage at Blackbaud Stadium. Ashton Bennet scored twice for Coastal Carolina with the Battery goals coming from Taylor Mueller and Matt Kassel. Ashton Bennett opened the scoring for Coastal in the 5th minute finishing neatly from close range after some good build-up down the left side. John Wilson almost leveled the scores in the 43rd minute after he earned a free-kick just outside the box. Wilson took the free-kick himself but was denied by an acrobatic save from goalkeeper Mark Bixler.
