College of Charleston Opens Observatory to the Public

CHARLESTON, SC – The planets Venus and Jupiter are dancing alongside each other this week in a rare conjunction. On March 16, you will have a unique opportunity to watch this extraordinary event. This Friday, The College of Charleston’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will open the school’s observatory to allow the public a chance to see the two planets. The observatory will be open from 8:30 p.m. until 10p.m. Along with the telescopes, experts will be on hand to answer questions you may have about the planets and other celestial objects. Track & Field Standout Selected for Academic Achievement and Community Service Charleston, S.C. (March 13, 2012) – The Family Circle Cup has selected sophomore Elle Brewer, a Communications major and Cross Country / Track & Field student-athlete, as it’s 2012 College of Charleston scholarship winner. In addition to a $5,000 grant from the tournament, Brewer will participate in the coin toss prior to the first night session match on stadium court, Tuesday, April 3rd, during the Family Circle Cup. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston track & field team will kick off the outdoor season by co-hosting the Palmetto Classic with the Citadel. The meet will take place Friday at the Park West Track Complex in Mt. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In its Southern Conference opener, the College of Charleston women’s tennis team handed Samford its first home loss of the season, 6-1, on Thursday at the Samford Tennis Center. The defending champion Cougars (5-4, 1-0 SoCon) have now won 23-straight league regular-season matches after putting together two consecutive undefeated 10-0 campaigns en route to NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and 2011. The Bulldogs (8-2, 0-1 SoCon) had started off the season 8-0 at their home facility and looked poised to remain unbeaten after winning the doubles point and taking the early 1-0 advantage. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The College of Charleston sand volleyball team opened its 2012 season against Florida State and Stetson on Thursday in the Aspire Higher tournament in Winter Haven, Fla. The Cougars lost to Stetson, 3-2, and lost to Florida State, 5-0, in dual meet scores. FAU did not compete in the meet. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team won its fourth in a row with a 4-1 decision over Rutgers to complete the doubleheader sweep on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center.   The Cougars (8-4) played a shortened team format against the Scarlet Knights (5-5) with four singles and one best-of-three doubles match after defeating Appalachian State, 7-0, in the earlier portion of the twinbill.   Junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) went a perfect 2-0 in singles against ASU and Rutgers combined. Women’s Golf Finishes 13th at LSU Golf Classic

Cougars Hold Off Furman In Ninth Inning, Win 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After College of Charleston’s Christian Powell shut out Furman for eight innings, the Paladins scored three runs in the ninth inning to nearly pull off a dramatic walk-off victory. Senior Kyle Owings struck out the last batter of the game on a called third strike and the Cougars won, 4-3. The Cougars (11-3, 3-2) won their fourth game in a row and second straight in conference play. Furman fell to 8-7 and 0-2 in SoCon play. Powell (3-1) went for his longest outing of the season, pitching eight innings, allowing just three hits and tying his career high with eight strikeouts.
