College of Charleston Basketball: Scott and Carlton Released

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston men’s basketball players Jordan Scott (Darlington, S.C.) and James Carlton (Winterville, N.C.) have been released from their scholarships.   Scott, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard, played in 29 games during the 2011-12 season with 14 starts. He averaged 3.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. Scott was released in March by the previous coaching staff.   Carlton, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, saw limited action in 22 games this past season averaging 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds off the bench for the Cougars.   “We wish Jordan and James the very best as they both continue to pursue their academic and athletic goals,” CofC Head Coach Doug Wojcik said.

Charleston Battery beats Harrisburg City Islanders

Charleston, SC – The Charleston Battery defeated the Harrisburg City Islanders by a score of three goals to one Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,634.  Midfielder Navion Boyd recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Battery to its ninth win of the season.  With the win Charleston (9-3-0) remains in second position in USL PRO five points behind Orlando City.   “The players performed very well tonight and can be proud of the way they acquitted themselves against a strong team” said Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser.  “Scoring the goal just before half time was critical as it game us the momentum and allowed us to dictate the tempo of the game after half-time.” […]

Cougars Honored On SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston had 15 student-athletes honored on the 2012 Southern Conference Spring Academic All-Conference Team released by the league office on Thursday.   The five-time SoCon champion CofC women’s tennis team had three of its own represented on the list in senior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.). All three are members of the CofC Honors College and tied for the highest grade-point average of all spring honorees with a perfect 4.0 in psychology, physical education and communication respectively.   Eleven of the 15 Cougars recognized on the academic all-conference team held a 3.5 GPA or better including senior men’s tennis player and 2012 NCAA Doubles […]

David Peterson Signs With Braves, Begins Pro Career In Rome

ROME, Ga. – Former College of Charleston pitcher David Peterson has signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Braves and will begin his pro career with the Rome Braves in Rome, Ga. Peterson was drafted by the Braves in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Entry Draft.   A native of Walnut Creek, Calif., Peterson led the Cougars with 10 saves which ranked third in the Southern Conference in 2012. He finished with a 3.40 ERA and a record of 1-3 as the team’s closer. College of Charleston Women’s Basketball Coach Adair Announces 2012 Signing Class

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women’s basketball head coach Natasha Adair has announced her signing class for 2012. The class includes three transfers and one who graduated from high school this past year.   Erin Hall (Wake Forest), Afreyea Tolbert (Northeastern), Breannah Davis-Bloom (Norfolk State) and Shannon Hines (RS Central High School) make up the class for the Cougars. Hines and Tolbert will be eligible to play immediately, while Hall and Davis-Bloom will have to sit out a season before playing.   Hall, a 5-8, redshirt junior guard from Norcross, Ga., played in 26 games for the Demon Deacons during the 2011-12 season. Gantt Named ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American, Joins Christian Powell On ABCA All-Atlantic Teams

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Marty Gantt was named an ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American, while joining CofC’s Christian Powell on the ABCA All-Atlantic Region teams.   A native of North Augusta, S.C., was tabbed for the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team after winning the SoCon Player of the Year Award and garnering a spot as a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American. In 2012, Gantt led the team with a .373 average with 11 home runs, 46 RBI and 29 stolen bases. We did it again! Rescue, rehabilitate, release; it’s what we do! And if you’re a sea turtle, the very best part of what we do is release. That’s what happened to fourteen fully rehabilitated patients on June 6th. After spending from several years to just a few short months under our care, six large Loggerheads, two small Greens and six Kemp’s of varying sizes were given a hearty breakfast, a farewell ceremony and then loaded into their chariots for a short trip to the beach.
