Bentonville’s 149th Anniversary “Forced to Fight” Free Event March 15-16

FOUR OAKS, NC Feb. 20, 2014 – The Confederacy was nearly always short on man-power. By 1864, the desperate need for soldiers led to teenagers and men in their 50s being forced into military service. Younger and older recruits, along with others who had avoided the draft, often were given chances to “voluntarily” enlist to avoid the stigma of being drafted. Bentonville Battlefield’s 149th anniversary program, “Forced to Fight” will recreate a late war enlistment drive with costumed re-enactors. The March 15 and 16 free event also will focus on the hardships of conscription in Civil War North Carolina, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 1861, North Carolina had to turn away volunteers because there were not enough provisions […]

Broken Arrow Incident in Wayne County

Broken Arrow Incident in Wayne County

RALEIGH, NC January 24, 2014 – On January 24, 1961, a B-52G Stratofortress Bomber carrying two nuclear weapons crashed in rural Wayne County, 10 miles northeast of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. At the height of the Cold War, U.S. policy was to keep armed nuclear aircraft in the air at all times in the event of a conflict. Internal structural damage had begun inside the right wing of the doomed plane during refueling. During preparation for landing at Seymour Johnson, a major structural failure of the right wing occurred and the aircraft exploded at 8,000 feet. Three members of the eight-man crew were killed. As a result of the breakup of the plane, two nuclear weapons were released. Seven of the eight […]

RALEIGH, NC January 2, 2013 – On January 2, 1926, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company was formally incorporated by local business people in Wayne County. The shareholders purchased an acre of land for $1,000, constructed a 3,600-square-foot building and hired a factory superintendent and a sales representative. The salesman, Shickrey Baddour, a Lebanese immigrant, had conceived of the idea for the factory when he saw cucumbers rotting in area fields.  Within just a few weeks, the number of shareholders had grown to 21 from the original 13.
