Chowder Cook-Off March 9th to Support NC 4th of July Festival

SOUTHPORT, NC Feb. 21, 2014 – There are as many types of chowders as there will be those cooking at the Annual Chowder Cook-off on Sunday, March 9th from 1pm-4pm at the Oak Island Moose Lodge. In addition to the Chowder Tasting, there will be entertainment by “Party of Two”, a baked goods sale,  50/50 raffle, Door Prizes, and cash bar.  Advanced tickets are $8.00 and available at the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, 4433 Long Beach Road.  Tickets at the door will be $10.00.  A limited number of tickets will be sold. Tips to Stay Safe during Winter Weather EASTERN, NC, Feb. 11, 2014 – As the southeast once again braces for winter storms, the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross is preparing to respond if needed.  Five teams of Red Cross shelter volunteers are on standby in the Cape Fear, Coastal Carolina and Onslow County Chapter areas in the event that shelters need to be opened.   Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) crews are also on standby to drive Red Cross disaster relief vehicles located in Wilmington, New Bern, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Elizabeth City.  These vehicles can be mobilized to transport and distribute food, drinks, and supplies into disaster affected areas when travel becomes safe. Urgent need for blood donors with types O, A negative and B negative & platelet donors WILMINGTON, NC  January 31, 2014 — As severe winter weather begins to subside, the American Red Cross is asking all eligible blood and platelet donors to help offset a weather-related shortfall in donations. Since the beginning of January, winter storms and freezing temperatures have resulted in more than 600 Red Cross blood drive cancellations and nearly 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. In the Carolinas Blood Services Region, severe winter weather forced the cancellation of more than 50 Red Cross blood drives, resulting in more than 2,000 fewer than expected blood and platelet donations last week. “It’s the blood products already on the shelves […]

WILMINGTON, NC January 28, 2014 – After briefings with the National Weather Service, residents of coastal and inland New Hanover County should be prepared for harsh winter conditions. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Weather conditions will deteriorate during the day on Tuesday with significant winter weather impacts this afternoon into the overnight. New Hanove​​r County’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated as officials continue to monitor this winter storm in coordination with local and state partners. NWS Issues Winter Storm Watch for southeastern NC

WILMINGTON NC January 26, 2014 - The National Weather Service Sunday issued a winter storm watch for southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina. It will be in effect Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, another Arctic front is set move into the region late Monday, bringing very cold temperatures and the potential for winter weather. This front will stall offshore Tuesday and Wednesday. A low pressure system will develop along this front and move along the coast, bringing an extended period of snow and sleet to the area.
