Drungo Larue Hazewood was a hard-hitting slugger for the Charlotte O’s from 1979-82. A former first round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1977 draft (19th overall), Hazewood quickly moved through the organization. After appearing in 51 games with Rookie-level Bluefield in 1977, the Sacramento, CA native moved to Single-A Miami the following year. He appeared in 111 games that season and hit .242 with eight home runs. It wasn’t until he got to Charlotte that his bat broke-out in a big way. HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – The Coastal Plain League announced today that Layne Somsen of the Fayetteville SwampDogs has been named the 2012 Rawlings CPL Pitcher of the Year. Somsen, a 6-0, 185-pound junior from South Dakota State went 5-0 with an impressive 1.29 ERA during the regular season. In seven starts the right-hander pitched 42 innings of work, surrendering just eight runs – six earned – on 18 hits. Meanwhile, he walked only 15 and struck out 47. He also was a part of two combined shutouts, featured a 0.79 WHIP and opposing batters hit a mere .129 against him. Infielder Was Hitting .370 for Double-A Birmingham Fort Mill, SC – Carlos Sanchez, who was hitting .370 in 30 games for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, has been promoted to the Charlotte Knights today. Sanchez, 20, began the season with Single-A Winston Salem and hit .315 for the Dash in 92 games. A native of Maracay, VZ, Sanchez was originally signed by the Chicago White Sox as a free agent on May 6, 2009. He played two seasons for the DSL Sox (2009-2010), before appearing with Rookie Bristol in 2011. FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 22, 2012) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering five fishing-related events, clinics and workshops this fall at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville. Each one is free and open to the public. For fishing events and clinics, loaner rods and reels are available free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis.
