Fayetteville, NC – Layne Somsen (South Dakota State) was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Coastal Plain League for Week Five of the season today, after a brilliant performance against the Martinsville Mustangs on June 29th. Somsen went seven strong innings while allowing just four baserunners, and struck out nine en route to his third win of the season. His 38 strikeouts on the year are most by any pitcher in the CPL. GREENVILLE, N.C. July 2, 2012 – Bill Carson, who guided the East Carolina track and field program from ground level to one that developed Olympic competitors, passed away in his sleep early Monday morning at his home in Winterville at the age of 75. Under Carson’s 40-year direction, ECU athletes advanced to the NCAA National Championships in 18 of his last 19 seasons. General admission tickets are still available at a cost of $6 for adults and $5 for children (ages 5-12), seniors and military. As part of the club’s Time Warner Cable Twofer Tuesday deal, all tickets are two-for-one admission. Adult beverages will cost just $2. WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads got a pair of goals from Corey Hertzog, and a goal and two assists from Bryce Taylor, as they took a 4-2 victory against the Los Angeles Blues on Saturday night at Legion Stadium. A pair of early goals keyed the Hammerheads’ victory, sending a crowd of 5,146 home happy as their side rebounded from a pair of defeats last weekend. Peter Byers scored the lone goal in the 47th minute driving a shot past Battery goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra from 12 yards out. Despite the loss Charleston (10-4-0) remains in second position in the USL PRO standings four points behind the Orlando City Lions.
