HAMPTON, Va. – The Morehead City Marlins (3-9 second half, 13-26 overall) scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to a 15 -3 win over the Peninsula Pilots (5-8 second half, 17-23-1 overall) Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium. The 15 runs were a season-high for Morehead City as it marked the first time it had cracked double-digits all season. The win snapped a six-game losing streak, a streak in which they scored only 12 runs. Charleston, SC – The Charleston Battery defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads by a score of three goals to one on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,782. Charlotte Bobcats Awarded Center Brendan Haywood Off Waivers

July 14, 2012 – Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced today that the team has been awarded center Brendan Haywood off waivers from Dallas. Haywood was designated by the Mavericks as the team’s amnesty player.   An 11-year NBA veteran, the 7-0 Haywood has played in 733 career games for the Wizards and Mavericks, with 531 starts.  He has career averages of 7.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 23.7 minutes.  His career field goal percentage of .534 ranks seventh among active players and 28th in NBA history.   Haywood was a member of Dallas’ 2011 NBA Championship team, and has appeared in 53 career playoff games, averaging 6.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, while […]

Wilmington, NC – After the Animal Emergency Trauma Hospital of Wilmington Bark in the Park on July 7, the Wilmington Sharks have decided to invite fans to bring their dogs to Buck Hardee Field again on July 14 and 21. In an effort to help our canine friends, the Sharks have also partnered with Paws Place, a privately run, non-profit dog rescue facility in Brunswick County that has found permanent homes for over 1000 dogs since 1999. The K’s for Canines campaign, also sponsored by Rob Cutting State Farm Insurance, encourages fans to make a donation for each strikeout recorded by Sharks pitchers or to simply make a one-time donation to Paws Place. Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville SwampDogs (23-12, 5-2) improved to 13-5 at home this year with a 5-3 victory over the Wilson Tobs (13-24, 4-5) on Wednesday night. Fayetteville’s bullpen combined for three shutout innings to seal the win. The Tobs took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Dogs tied it up in their half of the frame when Blake Beemer (Ball State) drove in Sal Giardina (Lynn) with an RBI-single up the middle. GUANAJUATO, Mexico – While East Carolina junior All-America Tynita Butts has won a number of events on home soil the last several seasons, she can now add an international title to her repertoire as she captured the high jump gold medal at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U23 Championships held this weekend in Mexico. NACAC U23 Championships Results Butts and Canadian Michelle Theophille both cleared the bar at 1.82 meters, but Butts did it in less misses to claim the top spot on the podium. The other American representative, Boston University’s Allison Barwise, finished third with a mark of 1.74 meters. GREENVILLE, N.C. — Kirstin Buchanan Burgess has been named assistant women’s tennis coach at East Carolina University announced head coach Tom Morris on Wednesday. “It is a great opportunity to have Kirstin a part of our program again,” said Morris. “It was a wonderful experience to have her in our program as a player, and I’m elated that she will be joining our staff this year as our assistant coach. Pirates Ranked Among Top Swimming Teams In The Classroom

GREENVILLE, N.C. July 12, 2012 – The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) named the East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads Scholar All-America Teams for the 2012 spring semester this week. The ECU women compiled a 3.58 cumulative GPA during the reporting period for the award, ranking fourth in the nation among NCAA Division I programs behind Clemson (3.62), Alabama (3.62) and Northwestern (3.59). The Pirates had eleven of their student-athletes make the Chancellor’s List with a 4.00 GPA during the spring semester and an additional nine earning a spot on the Dean’s List with six more on the Honor Roll. The ladies squad finished just behind Clemson for the top combined GPA for both semesters. […]
