First Flight Foundation Donates Funds for Reproduction 1911 Wright Glider

RALEIGH, NC March 29, 2014 – A full-scale reproduction of the glider that Orville Wright and British aviator Alexander Ogilvie flew at Kill Devil Hills in 1911 now soars inside the entrance at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. The object is based on the glider the men used from Oct. 16 to 26 to make nearly 100 test glides. On Oct. 24, Wright made a flight of 9 minutes and 45 seconds into the face of a 45-mph gale, setting a record that stood for 10 years. With a 32-foot wingspan, the new addition to the N.C. RALEIGH, NC December 17, 2013 – On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft. The story of the Wright brothers began in Dayton, Ohio, where they owned and operated a bicycle store. Seasonal slumps in sales forced the brothers to expand, and they decided to try designing a self-propelled aircraft. After six years of studying the principles of flight, the Wright brothers developed several prototypes, some gliders and others self-propelled, and began looking for proving grounds along the east coast. Outer Banks, NC – After years of enduring cold temperatures while camping outside to ensure a booth space with electrical outlets, Outer Banks Wedding Association vendors said goodbye to long lines and added stress. In an effort to improve the current system, as well as to make it more feasible for other companies and organizations to host events here on the Outer Banks, the Wedding Association partnered with the Dare County School System to oversee the completion of a $10,000 electrical installation throughout the First Flight High School and Middle School gymnasiums. Wildlife Commission Completes First Phase of Dare County Boating Access Area

MANN’S HARBOR, N.C. (Dec. 6, 2012) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has completed work on the Mann’s Harbor Boating Access Area, and it is now open to the public. The site, off U.S. 64 in Dare County, was renovated to include three new boat ramps, two new floating docks, new bulkhead and shoreline docks and a gravel parking lot. The lot has 49 vehicle/trailer spaces and seven single car spaces. This marks the completion of the first phase of the project. By Madeline Bailey Staff Writer Almost a century ago, on a return trip to the Outer Banks, Orville Wright soared for 9 minutes and 45 seconds. From Oct. 21 to 24, Soaring 100 will be celebrating this historical event. Although the 1903 flight was historically important, the 1911 flight officially started the science of modern soaring. “In these flight tests, Orville Wright extended his own record for soaring flight set in Kill Devil Hills, in 1903, from just over one minute to a 9-minute-and-45-second record, which stood for nearly 10 years,” said Rick Young, vice president of the First Flight Foundation. Third-year SwampDog now has 162 career hits in the CPL KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. – Eric Grabe delivered two hits, including an RBI single in the ninth, as the Fayetteville SwampDogs fell to the Outer Banks Daredevils, 11-4, on Tuesday night at the First Flight Baseball Complex. Fayetteville (26-16, 9-5) led 3-0 after just one inning, behind a two-run homerun to left from designated hitter Joe Vaskas.
