By Kate Hussman bobcats.com CHARLOTTE, NC March 28, 2014 This past Tuesday the Bobcats teamed up with Family Dollar and Wells Fargo to pack 10,000 care kits for our troops serving around the world. Volunteers started showing up at Time Warner Cable® Arena at 5:00 am to unpack the Family Dollar truck filled with more than 140,000 different items to be assembled in our care kits. More than 400 volunteers from all three organizations spent the entire day prepping the items for our care kits and were joined by the Bobcats team and coaching staff to pack all of the care kits for distribution. DURHAM, NC March 25, 2014 – More than 35,000 North Carolina soldiers and civilians were among the 700,000 soldiers and civilians, Union and Confederate, who perished during the Civil War. More deaths were due to disease than to injuries sustained in battle. Bennett Place State Historic Site will present“Cruelties of War: Casualties and Medicine of the Civil War” Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to examine stories of suffering, healing and survival. RALEIGH, NC March 21, 2014 – On March 21, 1865, Union and Confederate forces fought the third and final day of the Battle of Bentonville in southern Johnston County. Three days prior, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston attempted to strike and overwhelm the left wing of Major General William T. Sherman’s Union armies advancing northward to Goldsboro. When the surprise attack failed, both sides settled into heavy skirmishing as Johnston began pulling his embattled Confederate forces across a single bridge at Mill Creek. On March 21, Union Major General Joseph Mower of the Seventeenth Army Corps was able to find a gap in the Confederate left, and pushed his infantry division through to threaten Johnston’s retreat route. George Holloman, Aviation Pioneer

RALEIGH, NC March 19, 2014 – On March 19, 1946, George Holloman, a pioneer in the field of aeronautical engineering and unmanned flight, died in a plane crash. The Northampton County native developed a keen interest in radio early on. After graduating high school, Holloman went to work with the Marconi Company, later the Radio Corporation of America, developing radio designs. He returned to North Carolina and enrolled at what is now N.C. State University, earning a degree in electrical engineering. At State, Holloman joined the ROTC program, and after graduation her received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army and transferred to the Army Air Corps. RALEIGH, NC Mar. 14, 2014 – On March 14, 1862, the Battle of New Bern was fought. The Battle was second of three major engagements in an expedition led by Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside. The first was at Roanoke Island in early February. After capturing the Island and securing the region, Burnside set his sights on New Bern, a strategic port. The advance on New Bern was a strategic success and provided a boost to Burnside’s reputation. He threw all available resources into the effort. Leaving a single brigade to guard Roanoke Island, Burnside’s fleet sailed on March 11, stopping at Hatteras where they were joined by an additional 13 gunboats, amassing a combined force of 11,000 men.
