NC Aquarium Earth Day Party for the Planet

PINE KNOLL SHORES, NC April 14, 2014 – The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores offers a personal touch to make the conservation connection at the annual Crystal Coast Earth Day Festival this Saturday. The Aquarium’s traveling touch tanks put live animals such as sea stars and horseshoe crabs at your fingertips during the event, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fort Macon State Park visitor center. Also enjoy live music by Gumbo Lily and fun, hands-on activities for children. More than 20 organizations annually join together for the observance, which is free. PINE KNOLL SHORES, NC Mar. 12, 2014 – No fooling – it’s time to register for summer day camps at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.  Online registration opens at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1. Registrations are accepted online only; phone requests cannot be processed. Camps often fill quickly so be ready – go to the program registration page and create a profile in advance. Campers enjoy outdoor adventures, behind-the-scenes action and hands-on activities. All camps run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The fee is $270 per camper – members pay $243. Aquarium admission changes effective March 1

ROANOKE ISLAND, NC Feb. 26, 2014 – Admission fees at the three North Carolina Aquariums will increase by a little less than $3 starting March 1.  Jennette’s Pier at Nags Head, also under the Aquariums Division, will institute a walk-on fee of $2 for sightseers; $1 for ages 12 and under.  The fee increases are part of an effort to offset shrinking state funding for the state aquarium facilities. “These increases will allow the aquariums and Jennette’s Pier to continue to fulfill our mission of conservation education, and meet our commitment of providing visitors with top-quality experiences,” said David Griffin, director of the Aquariums Division. “That includes everything from new animals, exhibits and activities to building maintenance.” The aquariums last […]

Tips to Stay Safe during Winter Weather EASTERN, NC, Feb. 11, 2014 – As the southeast once again braces for winter storms, the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross is preparing to respond if needed.  Five teams of Red Cross shelter volunteers are on standby in the Cape Fear, Coastal Carolina and Onslow County Chapter areas in the event that shelters need to be opened.   Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) crews are also on standby to drive Red Cross disaster relief vehicles located in Wilmington, New Bern, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Elizabeth City.  These vehicles can be mobilized to transport and distribute food, drinks, and supplies into disaster affected areas when travel becomes safe. Emergency officials continue to monitor rare winter storm

WILMINGTON, NC January 28, 2014 – After briefings with the National Weather Service, residents of coastal and inland New Hanover County should be prepared for harsh winter conditions. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Weather conditions will deteriorate during the day on Tuesday with significant winter weather impacts this afternoon into the overnight. New Hanove​​r County’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated as officials continue to monitor this winter storm in coordination with local and state partners. There are no plans to open emergency shelters in New Hanover County at this time. Emergency news and information is being posted online at http://emergency.nhcgov.com. NC Aquarium salutes volunteers

PINE KNOLL SHORES, NC January 27, 2014 – Last year, 272 volunteers gave more than 20, 500 hours of service to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The Aquarium honored them for their dedication and their valuable contributions at a Jan. 23 awards ceremony. Volunteers daily provide visitors with assistance at the information desk, as exhibit interpreters, at the two touch pools and during events. Volunteer divers assist with dive programs and exhibit maintenance. A few members of the force were singled out for special awards. Congratulations to the 2013 Volunteer of the Year, Gervase Motes of Newport, cited for serving extended stints as the costumed shark mascot, Friendly Finley, and filling a variety of other volunteer roles.  […]
