Three relay teams earned first-place finishes over the weekend Results CHAPEL HILL, NC March 22, 2014 – The East Carolina track and field program got the outdoor season off to a solid start as the Pirates tallied 10 first-place finishes at the Carolina Relays. “For the first meet of the outdoor season things went pretty well,” Head coach Curt Kraft said. “Both teams have to understand that when you go from the indoor season to the outdoor season there is transition involved. USGA Announces 2014 U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying Sites

24 Sectional Qualifiers to be Conducted Between May 5 and May 30 FAR HILLS, NJ March 17, 2014 – The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced sectional qualifying sites for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, to be contested June 19-22 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2 in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C. Sectional qualifying, conducted over 36 holes, will be held at 20 sites across the United States and four international sites between May 5 and May 30. Player applications are now available at www.usga.org/champs/apply. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. EDT on April 30. Updated Tee Times PINEHURST, NC March 15, 2014 – First-round tournament play at the College of Charleston-hosted 2014 Pinehurst Challenge was suspended due to darkness at the Pinehurst Resort’s No. 1 course on Saturday. The Cougars, one of the first groups to finish before play was called at 7:45 p.m. (ET), went into the clubhouse with a nine-stroke lead over Jacksonville State (+15) shooting a first-round 294 (+6). Sophomore Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) carded the lowest round of the day with a 3-under 69 which tied a career-low round, while freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany) shot a 2-under 70. RALEIGH, NC Mar. 2, 2014 – On March 2, 1781, Patriot forces under Col. Henry Lee, local militiamen and Catawba Indian allies surprised the Loyalist mounted cavalry of Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton in a well-planned ambush near Clapp’s Mill in Alamance County. As soon as the confusion caused by the first American volley was brought under control, Tarleton retired to cover and deployed his troops against the Patriots. Coming under heavy fire, the American second line became panic-stricken and retreated. Tarleton chose not to pursue. The British suffered 21 casualties while the Americans had only eight. RALEIGH, NC Feb. 23, 2014 – The North Carolina Symphony, led by conductor Andrew Grams, will perform Tchaikovsky’s timeless Swan Lake Suite in Memorial Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m., and in Meymandi Concert Hall Friday, Feb. 28 at noon and 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m.  The orchestra will also perform Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo and Finale, Op. 52, and in the evening performances, Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 64, featuring violinist Karen Gomyo.  The performances are in partnership with The Tsars’ Cabinet, a North Carolina Museum of History exhibition.
