MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, NC Feb. 26, 2014 – Marines and sailors with General Support Maintenance Company, 2nd Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, are scheduled to conduct a nine-mile hike through the townships of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, at 9 a.m., Feb. 27. The purpose of the event is to train and educate the Marines of GSM Company about the Civil War battle of Fort Fisher and allow them to walk in the footsteps of those who have fought and laid down their lives for this great country. WILMINGTON, NC, Thursday, February 13, 2014, 5:20pm – The Red Cross is continuing to assist residents affected by power outages caused by the winter storm. Shelter numbers have been steadily increasing since last night. In addition to opening and supporting shelters the Red Cross is beginning mobile feeding and distribution of supplies for vulnerable communities that remain without power. Tomorrow morning, Red Cross volunteers will feed breakfast to an elderly and special needs community at Glover Plaza in Wilmington who do not have power. And, the Red Cross is also working with emergency management in Columbus County to deliver pallets of water and heater meals for the residents in that community affected by the outages. WILMINGTON, NC Feb. 13, 2014 11:30 AM EST – New Hanover County Emergency Management announces a change to the emergency shelter location. As of noon Thursday, Codington Elementary School will open and become the primary emergency shelter location for New Hanover County residents. Codington Elementary School is located at 4321 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC 28412. The relocation of this shelter is being coordinated with New Hanover County Schools to reduce the impact to their operations. For additional information, the public should contact the New Hanover County Emergency Public Information Center at (910) 798-6800. A Spanish translator is available for non-English speaking residents at (910) 798-6808.

Tips to Stay Safe during Winter Weather EASTERN, NC, Feb. 11, 2014 – As the southeast once again braces for winter storms, the Eastern NC Region of the American Red Cross is preparing to respond if needed. Five teams of Red Cross shelter volunteers are on standby in the Cape Fear, Coastal Carolina and Onslow County Chapter areas in the event that shelters need to be opened. Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) crews are also on standby to drive Red Cross disaster relief vehicles located in Wilmington, New Bern, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Elizabeth City. WINNABOW, NC Feb. 5, 2014 – Take to the high seas and explore the “Navy Way” during the 149th Anniversary of the Fall of Fort Anderson Feb. 15-16, at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site. Visitors can experience the life of sailors on land during the American Civil War. Some sailors were attached to the torpedo service and others to posts not shipboard, but on shore. Demonstrations will include weapons, equipment and torpedo firings. Civil War torpedoes were not today’s self-propelled explosives, but fixed water mines, and will be detonated throughout the day. Urgent need for blood donors with types O, A negative and B negative & platelet donors WILMINGTON, NC January 31, 2014 — As severe winter weather begins to subside, the American Red Cross is asking all eligible blood and platelet donors to help offset a weather-related shortfall in donations. Since the beginning of January, winter storms and freezing temperatures have resulted in more than 600 Red Cross blood drive cancellations and nearly 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. WILMINGTON, NC, January 30, 2014 – Due to severe winter weather, the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region has lost dozens of blood drives since Tuesday, resulting in nearly 1,900 uncollected units of blood and platelets. In the Wilmington area, blood drives were cancelled at organizations including GE, UNCW, Ogden Elementary School and Coca-Cola in Leland. A total of 10 blood drives in the greater Wilmington area have been cancelled since Tuesday resulting in a loss of more than 300 units of blood.
