State Historic Sites and Museums Seek Volunteers for Park Day Saturday, April 5

RALEIGH, NC March 24, 2014 – As our nation commemorates the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the Civil War, volunteers across the country will once again answer their nation’s call to service. North Carolina State Historic Sites Bentonville Battlefield, Fort Fisher, Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson and Bennett Place, and the N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport, will participate in the April 5 national Park Day program. History buffs, community leaders and preservationists will team up with the Civil War Trust, History™ and Take Pride in America at more than 98 historic sites across the country to participate in the 18th annual Park Day. The annual Alligator Egg Hunt offers children a chance to learn, create and play this spring. Aquarium educators introduce children to a live baby alligator and share fun facts about these amazing reptiles found in North Carolina. Kids will also create their own special alligator egg basket. RALEIGH, NC March 18, 2014 – Casey Goggin from Pinecrest High School in Moore County is the North Carolina champion of Poetry Out Loud for the second consecutive year and will compete in the national finals next month in Washington, D.C. The 16-year-old Goggin’s wowed the judges with his recitations of the complex poems The Bad Old Days by Kenneth Rexroth, Chorus Sacerdotum by Fulke Greville and To Elsie by William Carlos Williams.
