CofC Cougars Can’t Hold Off Hofstra, Fall in Five

CHARLESTON, SC Oct. 1, 2015 – In a similar scenario to the College of Charleston’s conference opener against UNCW six days ago, the Cougars volleyball team fell behind 2-0, fought back to tie the match, but ultimately fell to Hofstra in five sets, 3-2 (27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-13), at TD Arena on Thursday.

“It’s disappointing,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We had opportunities to win points and ultimately win set, but couldn’t quite jump over enough hurdles. I’m proud of the way the team is fighting but we have to do a better job of starting our matches better.”

Trailing 12-5 in the first set, CofC went on a 17-6 run led by Melissa Morello, who recorded six kills in the set. Freshman Allison Beckman posted 13 assists, but Hofstra stormed back after the Cougars serve for set point at 24-22. The Pride took five of the final six points to claim the set, 27-25.

The second set was eerily similar to the first as the Pride (13-6, 4-0 CAA) fell behind and again came from behind to win the set. Trailing 20-16, Hofstra landed nine of the last 11 points to again complete the comeback.

Behind five kills from Morello, the Cougars took the third set, 25-22. The fourth frame was won with a solid block led by Kayla Tronick, who recorded four in the set.

Freshman Kennedy Madison a career-high 19 kills while Morello, who finished with 21 kills and 16 digs, her 10th double-double of the season. Hostra out-hit CofC .211-.192, but the Cougars tied their season-high with seven service aces.

Tronick totaled 10 blocks, a new career-high. Her previous high of six blocks was accomplished twice in consecutive games earlier this season.
