Closed Scrimmage Scheduled for Saturday
COLUMBIA, SC Aug. 21, 2015 – After enjoying an off day with the beginning of fall semester classes on Thursday, the University of South Carolina football team returned to the practice fields on Friday afternoon, working out in full pads.
“Just a normal practice today, nothing exciting happened,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. The quarterbacks continue to battle it out each day at practice. “Everybody had their moments, good and bad. Hopefully there will be some good tomorrow. They’ll all play a little bit (in Saturday’s scrimmage),” said the Head Ball Coach of the signal-callers.
The Gamecocks welcomed five walk-ons to Friday’s practice, as the roster expanded with the start of the fall semester. The quintet includes three newcomers: long snapper Logan Crane, a 6-3, 212-pound freshman from Dartmouth, Mass.; redshirt freshman quarterback Danny Gordon, a 6-0, 203-pounder from Worthington, Ohio, who transferred from Miami (Ohio); and safety Jason Senn, a 5-8, 181-pound freshman from Beaufort. Cornerback Demetrius Smalls, a 5-9, 170-pound sophomore from Bluffton, and safety Scott Grant, a 5-10, 178-pound redshirt freshman from Laurens, both of whom practiced with the squad in the spring, returned to the roster.
Those who did not participate in Friday’s drills included safety Antoine Wilder (right knee sprain), tight end Connor Redmond (back), and kicker Joseph Charlton (back).
The Gamecocks will move into Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. closed scrimmage. Media who plan to attend the post-practice interview gaggle should enter through Gate 4, walk south (right) on the concourse until they reach the southwest corner of the stadium and wait outside the team lockerroom/south stands near Gate 11 until the practice is completed.
