GREENSBORO, NC August 12, 2014 – The North Carolina Bankers Association Foundation’s Camp Challenge, a financial literacy summer camp for high-achieving, low-resource middle school students, has successfully concluded its 21st summer. For the first time, Camp Challenge was held at YMCA Camp Weaver in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Camp’s eight weeks of programming wrapped up on Friday, August 8.
Camp Challenge strives to impart positive financial management habits and foundational principles to North Carolina middle school students through a summer camp learning experience. Campers come from all regions of North Carolina throughout eight weeks of Camp. Over the past 21 years, more than 9,500 of these high-achieving, low-resource children have benefited from the Camp Challenge experience and its curriculum. To attend Camp Challenge, students must demonstrate high academic achievement and commitment to success. While in the program, students participate in a personal finance course as well as lessons on citizenship responsibility and wellness.
This summer, the kids at Camp Challenge have had the unique opportunity to hear from one of their own, D. J. Morrow, a rising junior at the United States Military Academy. He discussed leadership and citizenship responsibility with the rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Cadet Morrow, a Camp Challenge alum, credits his advancement in life to his experience as a Camp Challenge student, saying that it got him on the right course and helped him achieve all that he has thus far in his life.
During four weeks of this summer’s programming, the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry has been an integral part of the Camp Challenge wellness component. Dental students from UNC’s student chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPD) screened campers in pairs, allowing them to view the screening from a dentist’s perspective as well as a patient’s. Campers, many of whom have never seen a dentist, were given evaluations of their teeth with indication of any problems they may have. The children were instructed on what agency to see in their home county for free or low-cost dental attention.
Camp Challenge is an initiative of all member banks of the North Carolina Bankers Association.
