Stand at Attention - Wilmington NC

WILMINGTON, NC August 5, 2014 – Get ready for this unique event called The Stand At Attention Competition on September 6th, 2014!  The event will take place at Independence Mall Center Court on Oleander Drive in Wilmington. We will have a member from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines competing to see who can stand at attention the longest! Participants will start at 10:00 am and go until the last one is standing or 8:00 pm, whichever comes first. If more than one member is still standing, the winner will be determined by the amount of donations in their buckets at the end. The event is operated by Active Heroes, a 501c3 charity that is building a military family retreat to support veterans struggling with PTSD.   Special guest appearances by Carolina Beach native Kim Munley and Wilmington native Trot Nixon.  Kim is the Fort Hood police sergeant who saved countless lives during the Fort Hood terrorist attack in 2009 when she took down the shooter.  Trot Nixon played 12 years in the Major Leagues for three different teams but is best known for his play with the Boston Red Sox, where he was a fixture in right field for 10 seasons. Area high school JROTC units will attend to show support to those who are standing by doing push ups, sit ups, and march throughout the mall.

The Stand At Attention Competition began in Raleigh in 2010 when two friends, one in the Navy and one in the Air Force, wanted to prove which branch of the service was better than the other.  Army won the first year, Marines the second year and Navy won last year. This unique event has gone national this year. Events will be held on the same day not only in Wilmington and Raleigh, there will be one in Santa Ana, Ca., Houston, Tx., Nashville, Tn, and Atlanta, Ga. The original site in Raleigh will be streamed online all day on the Active Heroes website. To enjoy the live stream, go to
