Toronto’s own Daniel Kim grabs opening round lead at Southern Ontario Open

Mexico’s Mauricio Azcue, Scotland’s Steven Smith tied for 2nd a shot back

Burlington, Ontario July 24, 2014 – Gardner-Webb alum Daniel Kim had a roller coaster round and, like any good roller coaster, the best was saved for last. The Toronto native had a day in his hometown Open which saw him make as many birdies as pars with seven, while adding three bogeys. However it was his eagle on 18 which put him at 6 under par and gave him a one shot lead after the first round of play. Kim was even par through his first 12 holes, with three birdies and three bogeys washing each other out. Then he caught fire birding his next four holes and eagling the sixth to finish his final six holes at six under par.

The two players closest to Kim on the leader board are perhaps the two players who have come from the farthest away from Ontario; Mexico’s Mauricio Azcue and Scotland’s Steven Smith. Azcue, a former number one ranked amateur in Mexico, and Smith, a star at Western Carolina, both finished their first round at 5 under par. Kim’s countryman and former Kent State star Brett Cairns, out of Courtland, managed to finish his round at 4 under par which put him into a tie for 4th with two of the NGA Tour’s top regulars, Delaware alum Justin Martinson and Virginia alum Mac McLaughlin. Martinson, out of Avondale, Pa., has pulled off two wins this season with victories at the Gates Four Classic and the King Cadillac Shootout, while McLaughlin, out of Cleveland, Ohio, finished runner-up at last week’s Seven Lakes NGA Classic.

Two other local Ontario golfers, each from opposite ends of the spectrum, finished at 3 under par and in a tie for seventh. Mississauga’s Greg Doherty, who starred at DePaul, was the Great Lakes Tour leading money winner last season while Waterloo’s Luke Moser, who is still competing for Troy, is playing in this week’s event as an amateur. Still seven other local Ontario competitors finished the day at 2 under par and are currently tied for ninth. The group includes local legend Christopher Ross, who starred at Eastern Michigan and dominated this past season’s NGA Tour Winter Series by winning 3 events in a row and running away with the tour’s money title. The six other local players are Georgia College alum Colton Kalkanis (Barrie), Gardner-Webb alum J.J. Regan (Burlington), Korean native Justin YW Kim (Hamilton), Indiana University of Penn alum Zack Kempa (Brantford), Drury alum Thomas Hay (Langley), and Louisville alum Sebastian Szirmak (Toronto) who has starred on the Great Lakes Tour the past two seasons.

Auburn alum and leading NGA Tour money winner Dominic Bozzelli, out of Pittsford, N.Y., finished at one over par and is currently tied for 16th with 7 other players including former PGA Tour player and Florida alum Will Strickler. James Madison alum and 2014 NGA Tour Pro Series winner Jay Woodson, out of Richmond , Virginia, is one of eight players at even par and tied for 24th. This group also includes Stratford native Brett Nymeyer who is currently 2nd on the Great Lakes Tour money and points lists.

Play in the 2014 Southern Ontario Open resumes Friday morning with round two tee times beginning at 7:30am on the championship Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington. Spectators are welcome and, as always, admission is free to the public. Round two tee times can be found at
