Jurassic Sand Sculpture at NC Aquarium Pine Knoll Shores

Jurassic Sand Sculpture Greets Aquarium Visitors

PINE KNOLL SHORES, NC June 23, 2014 – When it comes to family fun at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Sandy Feat artists think big. Really big. The famed sand sculptors molded 16 tons of sand into a unique depiction of dinosaurs. This “sand-sational” accomplishment is near the Aquarium entrance, and a tyrannosaurus rex photo op.

Sandy Feat’s Ed Moore finished the creation in less than four days, with help from teammates Damian Hoffman and Gary Turner. The creation began by building plywood molds and moving the sand with a front-end loader. Shovels came into play next, followed by trowels and other smaller tools to shape the sand. The finely detailed scene was finessed with tiny artist brushes, spray bottles and drinking straws. Moore calls the sculpture “Sand-o-saurs” – a towering collection of toothy dinosaurs, intertwined and wrapped around boulders and sticks.
The Aquarium’s Dinosaur Adventure exhibit provided inspiration for the artwork.

A Sandy Feat sculpture celebrating a summer exhibit or event has become an Aquarium tradition in the past few years. The sand sculpture will remain in place outside the Aquarium entrance several weeks, weather permitting.  The Aquarium is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
