ZEBULON, NC June 21, 2014 —The Carolina Mudcats matched a season-high with 17 hits in a 12-2 drubbing of the Frederick Keys on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (2-1, 31-39) clubbed two home runs and stroked five doubles. They claimed the set by winning two-of-three from the Keys (1-2, 33-37).
LeVon Washington paced the offense with four hits and scored three runs. Luigi Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with his fourth home run and drove in two.
Shawn Morimando (7-2) dealt his sixth straight quality start and improved to 4-0 against the Keys this season. The left-hander held the Keys off the board through five innings before surrendering two runs in his final frame. Overall, he allowed six hits, one walk and struck out two.
Clayton Cook finished the game by blanking Frederick over the final three innings for his first career save. Brady Wager (2-6) shouldered the loss for the Keys after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits in only 3 1/3 inings.
Todd Hankins drove in a season-best four runs to lead Carolina’s offense and set the tone early. The center fielder demolished a two-run shot out to left. Hankins followed with fielder’s choice to drive in a run and a 3-0 lead after two.
Carolina proceeded to pull further away with a five-run fourth. Rodriguez cranked an opposite field shot off the scoreboard beyond left for a 4-0 advantage. The Mudcats loaded the bases with a walk to Yhoxian Medina, a single from Washington and a pitch hit Hankins. Erik Gonzalez bounced a grounder to short, but Adrian Marin bobbled the ball. The error helped the Mudcats score one and reload the bases.
Yandy Diaz drew a base on balls to force in Washington and Hankins scored on a single by Joe Sever. Jerrud Sabourin reached on a fielder’s choice to score Gonzalez before the Keys could escape.
The club came back with two more in the fifth inning on a single from Hankins and a double by Gonzalez.
Frederick cut into the 10-run deficit with two in the sixth inning. Trey Mancini deliver Mike Yastrzemski home with a single and he later scored on a sac-fly to center by Jason Esposito.
Any thoughts of a comeback were short-lived, however, as the Mudcats capped the night’s scoring with two in the last of the sixth. Rodriguez doubled home Sabourin following a single and a Medina’ sac-fly to right plated Rodriguez.
