CPL announces Select Team set to face USA Collegiate National Team

HOLLY SPRINGS, NC June 18, 2014 – The Coastal Plain League is proud to announce the first-ever CPL Select Team, set to take on the USA Collegiate National Team on Sunday, June 22 at 5:00 p.m. at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Coastal Plain League - CPLA committee comprised of league coaches, league officials and Major League scouts selected the team. The roster is broken down as follows: catchers (3), first basemen (2), second basemen (2), shortstops (2), third basemen (2), outfielders (seven), and pitchers (6).

Starting on the mound for the CPL will be PAC-12 Freshman of the Year Cal Quantrill from Stanford (Morehead City). Quantrill recently arrived in Morehead City after leading the Cardinal to the Super Regional round of NCAA postseason play. In total on the season, the right-hander led Stanford in ERA (2.68), strikeouts (98), and innings pitched (110.2), quickly asserting himself as the ace of the staff.

Further bolstering the CPL rotation is University of Georgia product Jared Cheek (Gastonia), who currently leads the league in strikeouts with 34 and is in the Top Five of five other categories: ERA (1.44), opposing batting average (.122), innings pitched (25.0), wins (3) and runs allowed (4). Cheek is also the reigning 919 Marketing CPL Pitcher of the Week after tossing a seven-inning complete-game shutout against Forest City on June 10.

At the plate, Anthony Marks of Coastal Carolina has burst onto the scene since joining the Copperheads two weeks ago. The sophomore outfielder earned 919 Marketing CPL Hitter of the Week honors in week two, and currently leads the league in batting average (.462), slugging percentage (.635), and on-base percentage (.525). Marks has also driven in nine runs on five doubles and two triples from the leadoff spot for the Copperheads, while scoring 13 runs and stealing seven-of-eight bases.

In addition to Marks, the CPL Select Team includes multiple batting category leaders: Kyle Nowlin (Martinsville) 17 runs scored, Orlando Olivera (Edenton) 27 hits, Ben Schmucker (Wilson) 18 RBIs, Brandon Rawe (Florence) seven doubles.

Steven Linkous (Wilmington) and Norm Donkin (Fayetteville) with two triples each, and Hunter Bryant (Forest City) four home runs.

While the CPL has welcomed the USA Collegiate National Team into its ballparks since 2006, this will be the first year a CPL Select Team will have the chance to face off against the best collegiate players in the nation. The Collegiate National Team has yet to name a starting lineup for the game but their full roster, as well as more information on the team can be found at the website here
