Winston-Salem, NC June 8, 2014 — Carolina Mudcats’ third baseman Yandy Diaz set a career high by going 5-for-5 with a double, but it wasn’t enough as the Winston-Salem Dash won a rain-soaked 8-7 slugfest on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Mudcats (27-34) split a six-day string with the Dash (26-36).

Anthony Gallas cracked his team-leading eighth home run and drove in a season-high four runs. Alex Monsalve finished with two hits, including his second homer of the season. James Roberts and Joe Sever also had two knocks.

The bullpens shouldered much of the workload as a rain delay of one hour, 43 minutes lost the starters by the fourth inning. Rob Nixon (1-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Brad Golderg (2-3) held Carolina scoreless on three hits across 3 2/3 innings for the win. Braulio Ortiz earned his second save in as many days with a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.

Adam Plutko made his third start for the Mudcats and surrendered a three-run homer to Jason Coats with one out in the first inning. Carolina got a run back in the third on a single by Gallas to plate Todd Hankins. However, Tim Anderson homered off Plutko in the last of the third to push the advantage back to three at 4-1.

With rain intensifying in the fourth inning, the Mudcats scored six runs. James Roberts began the frame with a single off Dash starter Tyler Danish. He scored on a double by Luigi Rodriguez and a fielding error by Courtney Hawkins in the left corner. Joe Sever reached on a throwing error by Anderson, with two out, scoring Rodriguez.

Trailing 4-3, Diaz laced his third hit of the day to center and moved Sever to second. Gallas demolished a pitch from Danish way out to left. The belt surged the Mudcats ahead 6-4. Monsalve immediately followed with a solo shot to left before the action was halted by rain.

Rob Nixon took over for Plutko when play resumed. After working around a double in the fourth, Nixon ran into trouble in the fifth. Hawkins scored Anderson with a two-out double and trotted home on a game-tying homer by Coats. Joey DeMichele kept the rally alive with a double. Keon Barnum brought around the deciding run with a single to left, scoring DeMichele.
