CHARLESTON SC Feb. 20, 2014 – Senior guard Afreyea Tolbert scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead three players in double figures as the College of Charleston women’s hoops team downed the Seahawks of UNCW on Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.
Junior Mikaela Hopkins also chipped in with a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double while Jazz Green dropped 14 points as the Cougars won their fourth road game of the season to improve to 14-12 overall and 7-6 in the CAA.
The Seahawks lost their eighth in a row and dropped to 3-24 and 2-11.
The Cougars built a 30-21 halftime lead and maintained a 10-point advantage midway through the second stanza before UNCW clawed their way back to within two just two, 45-43, on the heels of a Brie Mobley layup with 9:24 left to play.
The Seahawks would get no closer however; as Tolbert answered with a strong take to the basket and the Cougars assumed full control of the game over the final eight minutes.
Down the stretch CofC outscored UNCW, 15-4, taking their largest lead of the game, 65-49, with 1:59 left in the game following a Mikaela Hopkins put-back.
With the 67-53 win, the Cougars maintain control of fourth-place in the conference standings, one-game ahead of Hofstra – who has a game in hand – and one-game back of Drexel, who sits alone in third. The Cougars have claimed victory in three of four games against those teams this season.
Next up for the Cougars is a Thursday, Feb. 27, match-up with the league leading Dukes of James Madison.

On her teams 71-65 win…
“We knew that tonight was going to be a battle. We started off slow and clawed our way back. This time of year you fight to the finish. UNCW is well-coached and they’re good at attacking the basket. Our job was to contain and to box out. I thought we executed better in the second half. It was not a pretty game, but a road conference win is big. Our players gutted this one out.”
