Carolina Challenge Cup kicks off Saturday as Battery take on Seattle Sounders FC


Charleston, SC Feb. 20, 2014 – The 11th edition of the Carolina Challenge Cup kicks off on Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island with a double header of Major League Soccer action.  At 5 PM D.C. United takes on the Houston Dynamo then at 7:15 PM the USL PRO Charleston Battery squares off against MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC.

Seattle Sounders FC roster includes US men’s national team defenders Brad Evans and DeAndre Yedlin plus three former Charleston Battery players, Osvaldo Alonso, Lamar Neagle and Alex Caskey.

 

Saturday’s game versus the Sounders is the first meeting between the teams since the 2008 U.S. Open Cup semifinal when Seattle Sounders were still playing in USL.  The Battery won that match via a penalty shoot-out.

 

The Carolina Challenge Cup is the premier pre-season tournament in the US.  Each spring for the past ten years the Battery has been joined by three teams from Major League Soccer for the round-robin competition.

 

The tournament continues on Wednesday, Feb 26 with Seattle vs Houston (5 PM) and Charleston Battery vs D.C. United (7:15 PM).  The Carolina Challenge Cup concludes on Saturday, March 1 with D.C. United vs Seattle Sounders (5 PM) followed by Charleston Battery vs Houston Dynamo (7:15 PM).
