Charleston, SC Feb. 17, 2014 – The Charleston Battery kicked off its pre-season schedule with a 2-0 victory versus the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Blackbaud Stadium. Jarad van Schaik scored the first goal and trialist Dean Kelly added a second as the Battery began its preparations for the USL PRO season.

The Charleston Battery got off to a quick start with a goal in only the third minute of play from midfielder Jarad van Schaik.  The ball was pulled back to van Schaik just inside the 18-yard box and he drilled home a shot high into the roof of the net.

Former Cougar Zachary Prince had a chance to add a second for the Battery in the second period (the scrimmage featured three periods of play as both coaches used multiple players) after Charleston were awarded a penalty-kick but his attempt was saved by the College of Charleston goalkeeper.

Late in the final period the Battery scored a second goal when former CofC striker Luke Huggett snuck in behind the defense, and when his shot was blocked it fell kindly for trialist Dean Kelly to slot home.

The Charleston Battery takes on Coastal Carolina University this Wednesday, February 19 before turning its attention to the Carolina Challenge Cup featuring Major League Soccer on Saturday February 22.
