Pirate Softball Defeats Seton Hall, Drexel

ECU completes Pirate Snow Classic with perfect 3-0 record

GREENVILLE, NC Feb. 16, 2014 – The East Carolina softball team used a potent offense to defeat Seton Hall, 11-6, and Drexel, 14-1, on the final day of the Pirate Snow Classic Sunday evening at the ECU Softball Stadium.

Over the course of the two games, East Carolina (5-3) pounded out 27 hits and scored 25 runs and have now won four of its last five games.

In their first game of the day, the Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Seton Hall (3-4) after two innings of action and never looked back. Junior Gabby Andino and seniors Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and Kristi Oshiro each had three hits in the game, as senior Alex Fieldhouse went 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Redshirt junior Abby Wynne was just 1-for-1 at the plate, but drew four walks and scored three times. ECU recorded 14 hits in all.

Andino made her first-career start in the circle for East Carolina and hurled three scoreless innings, before surrendering four runs and being chased from her outing with one out in the fourth. Freshman Lydia Ritchie (1-1) fired three shutout frames and allowed just three hits while walking none to close out the game and earn her first victory.

Against Drexel (0-4) in the final game of the day, the Pirate offense exhibited no signs of letting up, as the Pirates hammered out 13 more hits from 11 different players. Andino led the way going 2-for-2 with a career-high four RBI, as freshman Alex Mycek also went 2-for-2 off the bench with three RBI. Oshiro had a team-high three runs scored and extended her hitting streak to six-straight games, while Kaluhiokalani-Glackin, Shelby Johnson and Wynne scored two runs apiece.

Junior pitcher Sarah Christian (3-1) threw five innings of two-hit ball, allowing 1 unearned run and one walk while striking out five.

East Carolina will return to action when it heads to the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. Play begins Friday, Feb. 21, when the Pirates face Albany at 3:30 p.m., before taking on nationally-ranked South Alabama at 5:45 p.m., on ESPN3.
