Fort Ann, NY, February 10, 2014-On January 24th, 1920, the UNC Tarheels beat the Duke Blue Devils 36-25 in their first basketball matchup. The rivalry between two of what are, arguably, some of the biggest powerhouses in ACC and NCAA basketball, has only grown deeper since then. UNC leads the overall wins over Duke with 132 wins and the Blue Devils coming in with 104. The Tarheels also lead in NCAA National Championships 5 to 4. For nearly a century, these two teams have divided the state of North Carolina and even the nation into two factions that wear different shades of blue.
There have been many memorable games since that first one and they battle it out at least twice a year. This game, Duke looks to be the favorite but this gives the Heels a chance to get back into the game as far as hunting for a conference title is concerned, with a win. Sitting on top of a 5 game win streak, the Tarheels look poised to possibly upset the Blue Devils at home. With a win on Wednesday night, the Heels could position themselves much higher in the ACC and NCAA rankings.
On Wednesday, February 12th these two team will once again battle it out at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Duke is currently ranked 4th in the ACC standing one place up from the 5th place Tarheels. Duke is the only team of the two that are currently ranked in the AP Top 25 at number 8 in the nation. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 pm and tickets are still available through the links on this page.
