Chris Kirk gets 1st PGA Tour Win of Season for NGA Tour alums at McGladrey Classic

65 NGA Tour Alums (49.2% of the field) compete in PGA Tour McGladrey Classic including 2013 NGA Tour members Hunter Hamrick, James Vargas

Sea Island, GA November 11, 2013 – NGA Tour alum Chris Kirk won the McGladrey Classic this past week (November 7 – 10), grabbing the 1st win by an NGA Tour alum on this new, young PGA Tour season. It only took until the 3rd full field event of the season but Kirk -14 managed to hold off Briny Baird and Tim Clark by a shot for the victory. Consistency was the name of the game for Kirk as he posted 4 consecutive rounds in the 60’s, shooting 66 thrice. Fellow NGA Tour alums John Senden and Scott Brown matched Kirk’s feat of shooting in the 60’s all 4 rounds but could only go low enough at 12 under par to finish tied for 4th with another NGA Tour alum, Brian Gay. Past PGA Tour Q School medalist and NGA Tour winner, Brendon Todd, finished T16 with 2001 NGA Tour Player of the Year and Masters Champion Zach Johnson. NGA Tour alum George McNeill, who was the first day leader, finished T22 with Scott Langley who, at this time last year, was playing on the NGA Tour Winter Series in Orlando, showing that the path from the NGA Tour to the PGA Tour can sometimes come far sooner than later. Monday qualifiers Eric Axley and Josh Broadaway, both winners on the NGA Tour, finished T48 with fellow NGA Tour winner Mark Wilson. NGA Tour winner Erik Compton celebrated the day before his birthday by finishing T63 with fellow NGA Tour winner and two-time PGA Tour champion Scott Piercy.

With the win, Kirk earned 500 FedExCup points, vaulted to 4th in the 2013-14 rankings, and became the first player from Sea Island to win the locally held event hosted by his childhood hero Davis Love III.

“To come here to Sea Island, which is a place that I love and cherish so much, and Davis’ tournament, it’s just an unbelievable thing,” Kirk said. “Davis was kind of my guy when I was 12 and 13, really starting to play golf. He was my favorite player, and he’s turned from being my idol to sort of a mentor and good friend. So I’m a very lucky person to be in that situation, and to win his tournament really means a lot of me.”
