Raleigh, NC September 30, 2013 – Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason is out with a concussion, head coach Kirk Muller said on Monday.
Muller said Gleason suffered a concussion in the Sept. 21 preseason game against Montreal. Gleason, 30, fought Jarred Tinordi at the 4:41 mark of the first period, and though he played the remainder of the opening frame, he did not return after the intermission.
“We’ll just go through the protocol, and when the time is right we’ll get him back into action,” Muller said.
In other injury news, the Hurricanes placed Tuomo Ruutu on injured reserve on Sunday, retroactive to Sept. 21. The forward is sidelined with a lower-body injury unrelated to his injured hip from last season, and he is eligible to be activated at any point.
“The next step is they get to stark working with the team and get practicing. They need to do that before they get into action with the team for games,” he said. “We’ll watch them each day and see if they progress, which they are right now.”
Initially, Lindholm was penciled into the third-line center position. In his absence, Riley Nash has jumped into that role with the same confidence he exuded last season. The upside of Lindholm? His versatility.
“He could play center on the third or fourth line. He could play the wing on either of those lines,” Muller said. “It’s just a matter of who our personnel is to support him. I’m comfortable with him either playing center or the wing.”
In the good news category on the injury front, Jeff Skinner returned to practice today with the Hurricanes.
“He looked good today,” Muller said. “He had a little light skate yesterday, and it was good to see him out with the group.”
Final rosters are due to the league by 5 p.m. today, and the Hurricanes finalized theirs by sending defenseman Ryan Murphy to Charlotte. This leaves the Canes with 22 players on their active roster, in addition to Ruutu on injured reserve and Joni Pitkanen on the team’s injured non-roster list. The unsigned Radek Dvorak is a 23rd body still in Raleigh.
“Jim (Rutherford) will communicate with his agent,” Muller said of the chances of Dvorak signing with the Canes. “For me as a coach, my feedback was that I thought he performed really well.”
With the status of a number of the team’s top players still in limbo, the lineup submitted today could differ quite a bit from the one that will be iced on Friday versus Detroit.
“We’re kind of day-to-day right now,” Muller said.
