SOUTH BEND, IN September 24, 2013 – The College of Charleston men’s golf team shot 7-over in Tuesday’s final round to place sixth at the Eighth Annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic held at the Warren Golf Course.
The Cougars entered the final day of tournament play in fifth, but slipped one spot as former Southern Conference foe Davidson shot 2-under to lock down a spot in the top 5 with an 869 (+17).
CofC carded a three-round score of 297-287-291—875 (+23) behind an even-par round from sophomore John Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and 2-over rounds from senior Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) and freshman William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.). The Cougars finished six strokes better than Notre Dame (+29), who hosted the two-day event at their home course.
The University of Houston, the only team to play under par for the week, won the team championship with a tournament-record score of 847 (-5). Kyle Pilgrim of Houston was the individual medalist firing a 5-under 208. Michigan State finished second (+10), Yale third (+15) and Georgia Southern fourth (+16).
Tim Mitchell, a redshirt senior from Austin, Texas, playing in just his 13th career tournament, turned in a three-round score of 218 (+5) to tie for 19th. Jonas tied for 27th (+8) and Ellis tied for 30th (+9).
It was the third-highest finish of Mitchell’s career next to tying for seventh during his freshman campaign in 2009-10 at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C., and finishing 12th at the Navy Fall Classic in this year’s season opener on Sept. 7-8 in Annapolis, Md. His second-round 68 also marked his second-lowest career round at CofC.
Ellis was 4-under on the par-5’s for the tournament, while Mitchell made the second-most birdies of anyone in the 13-team field with 12.
“Overall, it was a good tournament for us,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “We had a good mix of veterans and newcomers in our lineup with Tim and Alex leading the team. I am happy we were able to improve on our first round of play and finish strong in our last 36 holes of the tournament. We look forward to another challenging fall tournament at Firestone in two weeks.”
The Cougars will return to action at the Firestone Invitational hosted by the University of Akron on Oct. 7-8 at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
