Greensboro, North Carolina, September 12, 2013 - North Carolina 811 held its 2nd annual blood drive on Friday, August 9, 2013 in recognition of 811 Day. In 2012, NC811 Executive Director Louis Panzer envisioned that nationally, every 811 Call Center in the United States could stand together and save lives through blood donation.
NC811 began a partnership with the American Red Cross by holding its initial blood drive in 2012. As planning for 2013 began, both South Carolina 811 and Virginia 811 shared the enthusiasm for giving back to the community. The 2013 blood drive was sparked with a fun competition between states for the highest blood donations. After tallying of the numbers and several tense days of back and forth, NC811 won the competition wit 188 pints, Virginia placed second with 187 pints, and South Carolina was third with 172.
In the end, everyone was a winner as lives were saved through the generous blood donations of members within the excavator and utility industries. As 2014 planning is underway, we encourage every 811 Call Center in the United States to help save lives one pint at a time to reach our goal of 811 gallons. It would be an honor to have residents of North Carolina assist in this lofty goal, and the media outlets, by informing their communities, could go far in assisting with the effort.
