Kirk And Wolte Claim Top-10 Finishes In Season Opening Event

BRYAN, TX September 11, 2013 – The East Carolina women’s golf team closed out its first tournament of the 2013-14 season posting a 9-over par 297 during final round action claiming a fourth place finish at The “MO”morial. The 12-team, three-day event was held at the par-72 Traditions Club.

The Pirates (8-3) carded a three-day score of 893 (29-over) finishing one shot ahead of host school Texas A&M (894/30-over). Kentucky, who set a 54-hole tournament record of 872 (8-over), claimed the team title after firing a tournament record low round of 286 (2-under) Wednesday. Virginia (883/19-over) and UCF (885/21-over) finished second and third.

“It was a great was to start the season,” said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. “Finishing ahead of teams like Texas A&M and Florida State, who are always nationally-ranked, builds confidence for your squad as the season goes along. I thought both Katie and Fanny had a solid tournament and was proud of their consistency and the maturity they showed on the course.”

Junior Katie Kirk (218) recorded her third career Top-5 finish after her final round of 73 (2-over) taking home a share of fourth place. The Davidson, N.C. native ranked among the tournament leaders in total pars (t3rd/40), par-3 (t5th/2.92), par-4 (t7th/4.10) and par-5 scoring (t15th/5.00).

Senior Fanny Wolte (220) posted her ninth career Top-10 finish (16th Top-20) following her final round 2-over par 73. Wolte birdied the par-4 No. 9 and for the third-straight day recorded a birdie on the par-5 No. 15. In all, she had five birdies and ranked second among the 70-person field in total pars with 41.

Sophomores Nicoline Engstroem Skaug and Frida Gustafsson Spang both finished tied for 31st with a three-day score of 230 (14-over), while junior Emily Eng (238) finished tied for 49th.

Kentucky’s Haley Mills led wire-to-wire finishing with a 3-under 213, which tied a tournament-low record. Teammate Sarah Harris and Texas A&M’s Katerina Ruzickova both carded rounds of 74 (3-over) to finish in a tie for second, five shots behind Mills.

The Pirates will host its annual Alumni Match this Friday, Sept. 13 at the Greenville Country Club before traveling to Greenville, S.C. to participate in the Lady Paladin Invitational Sept. 20-22.
