ANNAPOLIS, MD September 8, 2013 – The College of Charleston men’s golf team made a runner-up finish on the final day of play at the 20th annual Navy Fall Classic held on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
The Cougars shot a total of 286 in the final round which was 2-over par and leapfrogged the squad to second place with a 579 (+11). Towson won the tournament shooting 14-under to secure the victory (554). CofC entered Sunday’s final round in fourth behind Georgetown and Saint Joseph’s.
Leading the way for the Cougars was freshman William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished his first collegiate tournament at 2-under par and in a three-way tie for fifth with rounds of 71 and 69.
Senior Alex Ellis (Austin, Texas) also placed in the top 10 at 2-over with rounds of 70 and 74. Another rookie made his collegiate debut, freshman Matthew Mahle (Lexington, Ky.), finishing one stroke behind Ellis at +3 for 11th. Senior Tim Mitchell (Austin, Texas) also tied for 12th (+4) as an individual.
“We got off to a slow start yesterday, but with the help of great rounds from our freshmen Rainey and Mahle, we secured second place at the Navy Intercollegiate,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said.
“I was extremely happy with our youngsters, Rainey and Mahle, both of whom shot in the 60s in the second round. Rainey finished fifth for the tournament shooting 2-under par and that is something I am extremely proud of, especially for his first collegiate golf tournament. We definitely have a lot of positives to take forward from this tournament to our next event at Notre Dame in two weeks.”
CofC will return to action at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic to be held on Sept. 23-24 at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
