Syracuse, NY August 25, 2013 – Jason Berken allowed just one run on two hits, Steve Tolleson had two hits to bump his batting average up to .300 on the season, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Syracuse Chiefs 3-1 on Sunday in the finale of their four-game series from NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY. The Knights won back-to-back games to earn a series split with the Chiefs.
Berken (11-12, 3.97) earned his team high 11th win after a solid outing. The Clemson University product did not allow a run over the first six innings of Sunday’s finale. He allowed the only Syracuse run of the game on a Zach Walters RBI groundout in the seventh inning. At that point, the Knights already had a lead.
The Knights scored their first of three runs in the top of the second inning on a solo home run by Tolleson. The University of South Carolina standout launched his eighth home run of the season in the second frame off Syracuse starter Jeff Mandel (3-9, 4.78), who was saddled with the loss.
Charlotte tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. Mandel allowed back-to-back singles to Blake Tekotte and Brent Morel to give Charlotte two runners on base with two outs. The Chiefs decided to go to the bullpen and call on reliever Tyler Robertson. That moved proved to be a mistake for Syracuse as Travis Ishikawa tripled home both runs to make it a 3-0 ballgame at that point.
Relievers Tony Pena Jr. and Daniel Webb were solid over the final two innings to close out the game and the series for the Knights. Webb struck out one batter over a perfect ninth inning for his third Triple-A save of the year.
Overall, the Knights won five of eight games in 2013 against the Syracuse Chiefs.
The Knights will now move on and open a quick two-game series with the Durham Bulls on Monday from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. LHP Charlie Leesman (3-3, 3.83) will start for the Knights, while RHP Merrill Kelly (8-3, 3.07) will start for the Bulls. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m
