ORLANDO, FL August 18, 2013 – The College of Charleston men’ soccer team opened its preseason with a 1-0 victory over the University of Central Florida in an exhibition match on Sunday afternoon.
Junior transfer Jake Currie (Sheffield, England) scored the game’s only goal when he collected a failed UCF clearance and instinctively and opportunistically scored his first goal as a Cougar as well as the game winner. Troy Peterson (Federal Way, Wash.) had served the entry ball with a well-placed left footed ball into the box.
Cougar goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Netherlands) organized his back line of defenders – Tanner Clay (Gilbert, Ariz.), Tam McGowan (Glasgow, Scotland), Connor Coons (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Tucker Coons (Alpharetta, Ga.) – in order to thwart a UCF team which maintained possession and created dangerous chances, especially early.
The Cougars wrap up preseason play with a home friendly with East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Patriots Point.
The regular season opens with the Nike / Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic over Labor Day weekend. The Cougars ignite the 2013 season with a banner match against No. 8 Akron. The match kicks off from Patriots Point at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.
