Charlotte, NC August 14, 2013 – The Charlotte Knights played their first-ever game at Knights Stadium on April 15, 1990. At the time, the Knights were the Double-A, Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Through the years, Knights Stadium saw the team change affiliates from the Chicago Cubs (1990-92), to the Cleveland Indians (1993-94), to the Florida Marlins (1995-98), and finally to the Chicago White Sox (1999-present). The stadium also saw a change in classification — going from Double-A (1990-92) to Triple-A (1993-present).
Over the years, many great players have called Knights Stadium home. Jim Thome played there before becoming a Major League superstar. Charlie Manuel managed there before guiding the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Series win in 2008. Sandy Alomar Jr., Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko, and even Curt Schilling rehabbed there. Major League Baseball pitching legend Tommy John once called games there. Celebrities and former players such as Kenny Chesney, Jeff Gordon, Cal Ripken Jr., Jim Palmer, Gaylord Perry, Dale Murphy, and Bob Feller, made appearances there.
Now, after 24 memorable years, Knights Stadium is nearly ready to see its final game ever. On Monday, September 2, the Knights will play their final regular season home game at Knights Stadium as they host the Gwinnett Braves in a 2:15 p.m. matinee game.
There have been 24 different Knights’ teams to call Knights Stadium home, and there have been tons of great memories over the years. And now, we need your help.
All this week (August 12-16) the Knights are looking for the “Top 10 Moments” in Knights Stadium history. The “Top 10 Moments” are presented by Strayer University.
