Morehead City, NC June 23, 2013 – The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team came into Big Rock Stadium ready to play as they defeated the Marlins by a score of 10-2 on Sunday night in Morehead City, NC.
Despite eventually earning the loss Logan James through a really strong first two innings of shutout baseball on the mound for the Marlins. Team USA then got things going in the third with two runs on base hits from Brad Zimmer, C.J. Hinojosa, Will Maddox, and Austin Cousino.
The Marlins did come to within 3-1 in the home half of the third after a laser single right back up the middle off the bat of Ryan Cranmer plated Dalton Britt who drew a two-out walk earlier in the inning. The Marlins failed to come any closer as they fell to the Team USA Collegiate National Team by a score of 10-2.
Logan James suffered the loss in the exhibition, while Tyler Beede picked up the win for Team USA. Collin Wellmon picked up a save as he tossed three innings in the ballgame.
The Marlins are back at it Monday night at Big Rock Stadium to host the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far.
