Woodbridge, VA June 23, 2013 — Kevin Keyes launched a three-run homer to center field that powered the Potomac Nationals past the Carolina Mudcats 7-5 on Sunday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Mudcats (0-3, 22-51) were swept for the sixth time this season, and the fourth time on the road. Potomac improves to 3-0 in the second half, and 45-27 overall.

Robbie Ray (6-2) earned the win despite a lack of command. The southpaw walked five hitters over five innings, and allowed four runs on eight hits. Rob Wort pitched out of a jam in the ninth for his fourth save.

Nick Pasquale (0-5) was roughed up by the powerful P-Nats in the loss, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in only 4.2 innings.

Bo Greenwell put the Mudcats out front with a two-run single off Ray in the first inning. The hit was one of five by the Mudcats in the opening frame.

It didn’t take long for the Nationals to answer, however. In the bottom of the first, Adrian Nieto and Kevin Keyes finished off a four-hit frame with back-to-back singles to drive in a pair. The teams combined for nine hits and four runs in the first inning.

Joey Wendle demolished a pitch over the high wall beyond right field for his seventh blast of the year. The two-run shot scored Francisco Lindor for a 4-2 lead.

Again, Potomac rallied with two of their own in the last of the third. Caleb Ramsey and Michael Taylor cracked consecutive doubles to pull the Nationals within 4-3. Jason Martinson tied the score with a long single to right.

The P-Nats surged in front of Keyes’ two-out blast in the fifth off Pasquale. Carolina had several comeback attempts, managing a run in the seventh on a single by Smith. Billy Burns made a game-saving catch in left-center on a deep drive by Wolters to end the frame. The Mudcats stranded two in the seventh and eighth, and left 11 on for the game.

Lindor recorded his second straight three-hit game. Joey Wendle finished the series with two home runs and four RBI. Jordan Smith had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

Mudcats return home on Monday, June 24th, for a four-game series with the Frederick Keys. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
