Pirates Turn In Second Workout

Highlights and Interviews

GREENVILLE, NC March 27, 2013 - East Carolina conducted its second official spring workout with a two-hour session late Wednesday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

After beginning drills with a pair of introductory appearances in shorts and helmets, fourth-year ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff will direct the Pirates’ first practice in pads Friday afternoon.

McNeill remained in an evaluation mode throughout Wednesday’s session, which like Monday, was held in cooler than average temperatures in the mid-50s. ECU spent the majority of the session keying on individual and positional fundamentals before capping the outing with a 26-minute “team vs. scouts” period that emphasized redzone and goal line work. In addition, punts and kickoff return coverage were stressed during the Pirates’ two 10-minute special team segments.

“I really liked the way everyone was flying around out there today,” McNeill said. “I thought we attacked things well and was pleased with the way we moved around on both sides of the ball. I’m also impressed to see the quality of leadership that already exists were the older guys are taking control of the team and that’s the way it should be. It’s been a productive two days in shorts and am looking forward to taking the next step with pads.”

East Carolina will follow Friday’s first full-gear practice with a similar session Saturday morning before returning to work next Monday.

NOTES: East Carolina will conduct its annual Senior Pro Timing Day Thursday morning … A total of 13 players who wrapped up their eligibility last December will participate in the event, which will take place in the Murphy Center and on Hight Field in front of a collection of 15-20 scouts representing National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL) franchises … After physical (height, weight, hand, arm) measurements are taken, the former Pirates will be tested in the vertical jump, broad jump and bench press before moving outside for 40-yard dash and short shuttle course times, along with various positional workouts (if requested by particular scouts).
