College of Charleston Softball Falls to Mississippi State

Cougars swept by the hot-batted Bulldogs at Patriots Point

MT. PLEASANT, SC March 14, 2013 – The College of Charleston softball team saw its three-game win streak snapped by a hot-hitting Mississippi State team at Patriots Point on Thursday evening. The Cougars were tagged with 8-0 and 12-1 losses with the only run on the day coming from a Carly Hansis homerun in game two.

The Cougars (11-9, 3-0 SoCon) were limited to just three hits on the day with Hansis’ (Little River, S.C.) homer and doubles by Mackenzie Maples (Corona, Calif.) and Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.). Hansis’ blast was the first of her career in only her fifth collegiate at bat and it sailed over the fence in left center in the third inning of game two.

Five different Cougars entered the pitching circle on the day with sophomore Alex Pizzoli (Livingston, N.J.) proving to be the most effective. Pizzoli pitched the final three innings of game two and held the Bulldogs scoreless on four hits and a strikeout.

The team will look to put the losses behind them in this weekend’s three-game Southern Conference series against Elon. The Cougars host the Phoenix in a doubleheader on Saturday and the single-game finale on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Patriots Point on both days.
