North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island gets new pier
Roanoke Island, NC March 11, 2013 – After months of planning, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is moving ahead with a new pier on Croatan Sound. The Aquarium recently awarded the building contract to Renaissance Construction of Manteo. The new sound-side pier is scheduled to be completed in June.
The 200-foot-long structure provides convenient visitor access for the Aquarium’s popular on-the-water programs and includes a covered gazebo, seating, lower-level dock and environmentally friendly lighting. The lower dock is designed to allow easy water access for the Aquarium’s many ongoing outdoor educational programs, such as kayaking, fishing and crabbing, as well as provide opportunities for new water-based activities.
Multipurpose use was a consideration in the design of the new pier. The covered gazebo is an alluring setting for weddings and other celebratory events, and sidewalks and landscaping enhance the surrounding area. Sunsets are available free of charge.
The Aquarium is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at 374 Airport Road, just north of Manteo. For updates on the new pier, or more information on Aquarium programs, activities or facility rental, click here.
