College of Charleston Softball Primed to ‘Beat Cancer with a Bat’

Cougars to auction off special game-worn pink jerseys during Saturday’s doubleheader

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team is preparing to ‘Beat Cancer with a Bat’ to raise money to support breast cancer awareness and research during Saturday’s doubleheader against Elon at Patriots Point. The day is being held in honor of Charlotte Klicker, mother to CofC pitcher Hope Klicker and breast cancer survivor.

“Breast Cancer is a nasty disease and has affected so many people,” said head coach Shelly Hoerner. I have seen the overcoming of such adversity, which has made people so much stronger and allowed people to have a different outlook on life.

“This day is in honor of Charlotte Klicker who is such a strong woman, an inspiration and a breast cancer survivor. Our Cougar family will certainly try anything we can do to help give back to hopefully finding a cure.”

The Cougars will be clad in special-edition pink game jerseys in order to raise awareness to the cause. During the game, the Cougars will auction off their game-worn pink jerseys with all of the proceeds going directly to cancer research. Pink lemonade will also be sold and personal donations will be accepted to raise money for the cause.

“It’s difficult to put my feelings into words, but my mom is an inspiration to me,” said Hope Klicker. “Her unfailing strength to persevere and beat cancer motivates me to be as strong as she is, and to continue to support breast cancer research in hopes that someday a cure will be found.”

The North Charleston Fire Department’s pink fire truck will be on hand to raise awareness as well. The truck will be at the field from approximately noon until 4 p.m. Charlotte Klicker will throw out the game’s first pitch which is scheduled for 1 p.m.
