Gantt (141) and Kosoy (285) both finish third at ACC Championships
COLLEGE PARK, MD March 9, 2013 – Junior Joe DeAngelo and freshman Sam Speno have qualified for the NCAA Championships later this month, thanks to their performances at the 2013 ACC Championships held today at College Park, Md. DeAngelo finished in fourth place at 125 pounds, and Speno also took fourth at 133 pounds, as the ACC was awarded four and five NCAA automatic qualifying spots respectively in those weight classes.
DeAngelo entered the ACC Championships as the fifth seed in a weight class in which the ACC is awarded four NCAA spots. DeAngelo narrowly fell to #8 Matt Snyder of Virginia in the opening round, 9-7. DeAngelo came back and upset #22 Shane Genty of Maryland, the third seed, 4-1. In the third place match, DeAngelo fell again to Snyder, by fall at 5:19. But DeAngelo’s fourth place finish was good enough to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Speno entered the ACC Championships as the sixth seed in a class in which the ACC was awarded a league-high five NCAA spots. Speno fell in the first round to #20 Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech, 8-5. He then pulled off the upset of the top seed, #13 Geoffrey Alexander of Maryland, 9-6. In the third place match, Speno fell to Spjut for a second time, 4-0. With Speno’s fourth place finish, he also advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Gantt was the fifth seed at 149 pounds, and picked up three wins on the day to place third. His day started with an 8-0 major decision over #31 Christian Barber of UNC. Gantt then fell to the top seed, #9 Nick Brascetta, 9-3, but finished with back-to-back wins. Gantt upset the third seed, Marcus Cain of Duke with a pin at 6:47 and then earned a 14-5 major decision over Lou Mascola of Maryland in the third place match.
Kosoy matched Gantt’s third place finish with a strong showing at 285 pounds. Kosoy entered as the fourth seed, and beat Brian Self of Duke in the first round, 10-3. Kosoy was then downed by #22 David Marone of Virginia Tech, the top seed, 10-3. Kosoy also closed strong, with back-to-back wins. He first recorded a 7-1 decision over Cody Klempay of UNC, and once again downed Self of Duke, this time 5-2, for third place.
NC State placed fifth overall with a team score of 30 points. Virginia Tech claimed the 2013 ACC Championship with 95.5 points, followed by Virginia in second (90.5), Maryland in third (48.5), North Carolina in fourth (45.0), and Duke was behind NC State in sixth (26.0).
DeAngelo and Speno both advance to the NCAA Championships, being held March 21-23 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pack is still awaiting at-large bids.
After all of the qualifying events have concluded this weekend, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 13. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches’ ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.
