Charleston Battery defeats Coastal Carolina in pre-season scrimmage

Charleston, SC March 7, 2013 – The Charleston Battery defeated Coastal Carolina University by a score of two goals to one in a pre-season scrimmage Thursday evening at Blackbaud Stadium.  2012 USL PRO Rookie of the Year Jose Cuevas led the way scoring both Battery goals to take his pre-season tally to five.

Cuevas opened the scoring in the 10^th minute after a flicked header from forward Heviel Cordoves.  The ball squirmed past the Coastal goalkeeper and Cuevas tapped in from close range.

The Battery withstood a spell of pressure from Coastal after going ahead and cleared the ball of the line twice in a five minute span midway through the half.

Forward Dane Kelly almost doubled Charleston’s advantage just before half-time after running through onto a long pass.  Kelly flicked a shot at goal but Coastal’s goalkeeper managed to palm the ball away.

Coastal equalized just before the hour mark but the Battery restored their lead within ten minutes.  In the 65^th minute Cuevas collected a through ball rounded the last defender and drilled the ball home from an acute angle.

The Charleston Battery continues its USL PRO preparations next Friday afternoon with a 2:30 PM match vs. the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Stadium in Cary, NC.
